This really is a great question. This is probably the most important question anyone can ask or seek. You must believe that either a) this universe was made by chance or b) someone made it. If you look at how improbible the odds are that this universe made itself by chance you realize that option b is more reasonable and is more likely. If you still believe that it is still possible for the universe to make itself you must factor in the probablity that our sun would be the perfect size to support life, our solar system to be located in this part of the galaxy (and not located by a black hole), the probability that the Earth would be located perfectly so that it wouldn't burn or freeze, and the probability that life would form from nothing under intollerable conditions that many evolutionists believe that life sprang up from.
Now if the universe was created by someone it would be in our best interest to find out who that creator is. For example, if someone makes a computer program you are only allowed to do certain things in the program for it to work. Two things can be gleamed from this illustration. First, you don't have to see the computer programer in order to believe he exists. If you see a painting hanging on a tree you don't assume that the painting evolved from that tree and appeared. You assume that a painter painted it. Second, there are rules in a universe that was made. If that person who made the universe is real he must have a reason to make it, be very powerful, and have rules that govern it. We can see this by the nature that surround us. A phelelum, which many evolutionists believe is a very simple creature and one that we've "evolved from", has the world's most complex and efficent motor to move. It spins at 80,000 RPM as is equivalent to a human being swiming 60 MPH through peanut butter. The creator is very powerful. We have the laws of thermodynamics, gravity, math, etc. The creator made rules to govern the physical world. If this creator made rules for the physical world the creator would also make rules for the mental, spiritual, and any other aspects of this life. We must find out what these rules are. So if a computer programmer creates a program he/she will also give you a manual. I believe that The Bible is the Creator's manual to this life. I believe this because it makes the most sense and all the other "owner's manuals" are false, fake, or don't make sense. The Bible states that the most important question in this life is who God is and how we react to Him.
You say we should just "do what makes us happy". What if I think killing babies and eating puppies are good? I'm happy and you have no reason to judge me! Now if there is no God, no justice/punishment, then I can do whatever I want without fearing any consequence. If this universe was made by chance then nothing really matters since this is all some "cosmic accident". If that's true we should drink to the max, do drugs to the max, have as much sex as possible, and not care about anyone or anything. I mean come on we're going to be dead a lot longer than we're going to be alive. Then we're just worm food. The only thing that would matter is having the best experience possible.
However this view doesn't jive well with our beliefs. We don't think we should have let Hitler try to take over the world. Why? Because we thought it was wrong and evil. The only way we can talk about the concepts of "wrongness" and "evilness" is when we talk about the concept of "goodness" and "rightness". A universe based on chance does not have these concepts. A universe with a creator would.
I do agree that no one should force anything on you. Because if God didn't force it on you, who else should? God made us free willed beings. He is soverign enough to let us choose to believe in Him or not. However, there are consequences to the choices we make. We can see this in life. If you think 2+2=5, you are wrong and you will, say, crash a Mars lander. Even if you right that on a piece of paper and truly believe you are right, you are still wrong. So the real question you should ask is "Since God exists...what is His plan for me and what should I do about it?" The Bible tells us that we are created to have a personal relationship with God. He loves us so much that he created us and wants to a) have a relationship with us and b)never wants us to die. The Bible also says that man spit in God's eye and fell from the perfect life He gave us. Since God is a loving God, He is also a just God. A judge who lets everyone go, is a loving judge but he is not a just judge and we'd throw him off the bench. The same is true for God. God must punish man for his sin. Sin is the breaking of God's law. If you've ever lied once, that makes you a liar. If you've ever stolen once, that makes you a theif. If you've ever sinned (broken God's commandments that help us and protect us in our daily life) once, that makes you a sinner. However the loving and just God, is also a merciful and graceful God. God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, down to Earth. He lived a perfect life and spoke many great truths. For spreading love, compassion, and grace...He was killed. He showed Himself to be God by rising Himself up. He beat eternal death and allowed us an alternative route to living a perfect life in an imperfect world. Jesus said to believe on Him and you will be saved (from eternal punishment). That's it. You don't need to "do good deeds" because how many good deeds does it take to get into Heaven? The answer to that is "none, just live a perfect life or accept Christ as your Savior. People try to scare people into choosing. They say, "If you don't believe this you'll go to Hell." Well, they are correct. However the hope and message believers are suppose to speak on is how God's love has changed their lives. We are not perfect, and we still sin. But we have the grace of God protecting us and His Son's blood encompassing our lives. Christ changes all those who sincerly ask Him into their lives. This is the great message of God. The Creator of the universe is loving, just, caring, graceful, and all powerful. If you don't accept Him in this life...you'll be a believer when you meet Him in the next. Unfortunately...it'll be too late then. This life is the chance you have to make the most important decision of your entire existence. Seek and find.

Yours IS a question of religion/spirituality. The brainwashed won't even consider using 'reason' in normal conversation about the issue of whether or not there is a god, etc. They are so full of fear they are beyond repair, beyond having a mind of their own. When they don't have an answer they will quote scripture.
IF there is/was a God... I would imagine he/she would have been a kinder, more loving and helpful diety... This is not how life on our planet is moving along. Starving, sick, tortured, homeless, you know all of this. What kind of god with all those powers allows such misery?
I can't swallow it. I believe we have to have faith in ourselves and to believe in the good of others. I believe people are good, no matter what mistakes they make, we all make them.
What a ridiculous notion to believe we are doomed to an eternity in hell. Just where is that located? LOL

The reason why we fuss over god is because the Christian right can’t stop pushing it on us. No one would care if they just worshipped to themselves, but they can’t do that. They have to force the rest of us to believe what they believe because it’s for our own good! Until they realize that everyone is their own person and has the right to pursue their own happiness the argument will rage on. However, it’s really not an argument, just some kids pouting about how the teacher proved them wrong.

You do what you feel you have to do, and the true Christians will do what we have to do. I don't think the fuss is over God per se, but more for your Salvation. It's His free gift of love for us..if you don't want it, then I guess you'll be burning in Hell for eternity. By the way...do you realize how long that is?? I don't want to be in that kind of misery for a second...let alone for eternity! But that's your choice. If you need spiritual guidance, I'm sure that there are any number of true Christians who would be willing to help you with that. I hope for your sake you seek and find Him.

Human freedom means doing the what we have to do: the Will of God and not doing the thing we want to do. Human beings are naturally flawed by original sin. We should care because we will either spend eternity in heaven or hell. If you don't want heaven, there is only hell for you.

You pose a very good question and point. You may find this article interesting. http://www.watchtower.org/library/w/2003/12/1/article_01.htm It also addresses the questions, why do so many still profess belief in God when apathy and indifference to religion seem to be sweeping the earth? Why do they go to church?

Each person is entitled to their opinion. Personally i'd rather live like there is a God and find out there's not than live like there isn't and find out there is.
Also if you don't want others to force their opinions on you, you shouldn't post a question like this!

It is for our own good. Everyone needs GOD in their life and the ones who have accepted him share the testimony that we have in our lives. In other words He is real man. HE is everywhere even next to you. Go to church to learn more and ask him into your life and you'll see a change.

Christians are required to force their beliefs on others, it's called the "Great Commission" and how they justify being so obnoxious and annoying to others.
