When needed spanking, works really well. And it really doesn't harm the child when it is needed. I only do it when I have to ( ex. running out in the street) The thing that ticks me off is parents that smoke around their kids. Smoking around your kids is abuse. Even if you smoke outside the smoke that is on your clothes can harm your child. As a teacher it is really hard to help a child when the child smells like an ash tray.
Don't you understand that you are killing your kids when you smoke around them. And you are abusing them, just as much as a parent that is beating them.
I am not a smoker and my husband isn't either. But, both of our parents were ( my father in law still is) and I have asthma because of it. When someone is smoking, it makes me so sick that I throw up. It is gross and it smells.
If you smoke, you need to quit for the health of your kids! It is not fair to them and you don't need to smoke. Think of them and quit.

Don't you think it should be illegal for a parent ( or pregnant woman) to smoke around their kids period?? And if they choose not to quit their kids should be taken away? It is not fair to the kids.

I was talking to a CHP ( California Highway Patrol) officer about 3 days ago at the county fair. And he told me that one of the main reasons we are having troubles with teens today is because parents are not spanking. I asked him if spanking was against the law. And he said no, in fact he spanks his kids and most of the officers he knows do. He did say that beating ( using anything other than an open hand or other object or leaving marks) is against the law.
I have tried time out with my son. It doens't work with him. He is to hyper active and won't sit for more than 1 min. at any givin time. I take toys away but, I only spank when he needs it. And just the threat of spanking will make him stop. It is very rare that I actually spank him.

Smoking is definitely abuse - my brother and I both have lung problems from our parents and grandparents smoking around us.
Spanking can be abuse, too. Parents most often hit when they are angry and can't think of anything else to do. My parents never hit us and my brother doesn't hit his kids either. You have to demand respect - but you don't have to do it with a belt! I'd only hit a kid for something that was putting his life in danger - like sticking things in an electrical socket or running into the street. Read Dr. Phil's book about 7 ways to have a phenomenal family.

I wholehartedly agree that smoking around kids is one of the worst forms of abuse. My parents both smoked for the first year or so of my life. But they both quit when they realized it was triggering my asthma and hurting me. I've never picked up a cigarette myself. I have always felt that it would be the equivilant of walking up to my mother an spitting in her face.
As for spanking, I've never been against it. I just felt like it didn't get as strong of a result as I would have liked. One time in particular I gave my son a firm, in control, but extremely forceful talking-to after a particularly dangerous behavior. I wasn't positive if that had worked either. But a couple days later I heard him playing with his toys and he had one telling the other "YOU WILL NEVER, EVER, DO THAT AGAIN!" so I know he remembered the incident. And he has never repeated the behavior. So I think that voice can be a powerful tool as well. Probably all the more powerful because he knows that physical force isn't completely off the table either.

I agree with you that it is abuse smoking around children. My parents smoked, even in the car with the windows rolled up. I wish they had a law against smoking in vehicles with children inside. But I am going to have to disagree with you on spanking. I don't believe it works well emotionally or intellectually. I never spank my children. This doesn't mean I am a passive parent. My children do not run our home. I use effective techniques that work. I use taking away priviledges and time outs. We have well behaved children that respect and are respected. I am currently studying child development in college. I found a great site that explains spanking and the effects by experts. It is something all parents should read. I love children and wish they didn't have to live in a home of smokers or spankers.

well i am a mother and i dont believe that spanking your children is abuse but there is a line to that you should not cross. as for smoking around your children yes it is abuse they will get repeated ear infections among several other things, it can lead into asthma and that is no way for a kid to live,. I do think that when you are pregant you should not be allowed to smoke because you are caring for not only your life but that of an unborn who is expecting you to take care of yourself and where it is your right as an american to choose to smoke you need to give your baby a chance at a good healthy life and not be selfish. so i agree with you one hundred percent.

i agree with you. smoking around children is Horrible (smoking in the first place is horrible)
and I'm glad THANK GOD my parents arent smokers, nor do they encourage it.
ABOUT 13 year olds being babies: not true, i actually need the money for my everlasting love of photography, which needs certain materials and accessories, which, in fact, DO cost quite alot of money. i don't waste my money on candy on music, my parents can buy me that if i wanted it. As for allowence, i don't recieve one.
And Barbie Dolls? Who are you kidding? you'll find that most girls stopped liking barbies 4 years ago.
13 year olds are highly capable of what most 16 year olds can do, and judging by your answer, you would be surprised.
Best Regards~

Smoking around a child is just plain wrong. My parents smoke around all seven of their children and I won't let them smoke around mine. It's not fair to a child who doesn't have the choice to say no to it.
