During the day I take care of my 6yr old step-daughter while mom works. The father, on his days, pawns the kid off on to others while he has to "work". My step-daughter was accepted into a gifted school program, but doesn't know basics; ie: street smarts such as telling basic time like 5 oclock 6, 7 and so on. I knownot to confuse her with 5:55 or 12:30. Is it normal for a 6yr old to not know the basics? I've tried a clock so she can move the hands around. When I ask her to tell me the time on the clock she gets it right, but when you tell her to move the hands to 5 o clock and so on she says it's 100 oclock. She knows her #'s and writes them proficiently. I'm just tired of her getting in trouble over what I consider basic knowledge. What do I do so mom is in a better mood when she gets home?

My six year old (as of last Friday) still has difficulty with the half hours, but he's got the hours down. Of course, we do a little practice everyday (I set the clock and he tells me the time, he sets the clock and I tell him - sometimes I tell him the wrong time to see if he catches it). Six is really on the edge of learning 'time'. If she can read the time to the hour, just relax. She may be doing it because she's tired of you worrying about her. Soon enough, she'll be able to set the clock to the time you tell her. Try working on something else for a while, then come back to it in a month or so.

The truth is most of us just have to memorize them. Our oldest was having a hard time and my dad reminded me that the best solution is to memorize the tables. So, we started using flash cards with our 7 and 9 year olds - (you can buy them anywhere like Target or Office Max) or even make them with recipe cards. Problem on the front, answer on the back. We found it best to start with one set of numbers e.g., 2's and show the flash cards related to 2 x .... We show a card and literally given them 2 secs, if they don't know the answer, we say the answer, put the card down and move on. If they have it memorized they will be able to answer in 2 sec. We've made it fun and laugh A LOT but what a HUGE difference this exercise had made. We just go through the stacks over and over. The 9 yo is now doing division and three digit multiplication problems, she said she is soooo glad she memorized the tables. You said you don't really know the tables either - let her quiz you - she will learn that way too - in that case make sure the problem is also written on the side with the answer so she sees the problem and answer as she is quizzing you. The key is to do the exercise OVER and OVER - we often take out the ones they don't know and then concentrate on them for a time before doing the whole set of a given number. Good luck- as all math build on the tables this is a very important skill to master, I bet she will do just great!

Time is a difficult concept. You are right to only do o'clock. I would do it practically so point out when it is 5 o'clock or 6 o'clock or say "Tell me when it is 5o'clock." When it is about 5 mins to. www.bbc.co.uk/learning has lots of educational games and things and the same site but click on Cbeebies also has fun things to do. At this age every thing is learning so do lots of craft with her, read stories and sign sings and you will find that she will one day pick up telling the time just like that.

If she is kindergarden age, she will learn time to the hour. It is basic to us, but actually it is a very abstract concept. Especially to a 6 year old, what does time look like? In school, we don't introduce time to the exact minute until 2nd or 3 rd grade. By then, the kids have a better sense of what time is.

Yes it is normal. You shouldn't get mad at her for not knowing stuff she is a little girl. 6 years old is kindergarten age she isn't supposed know how to tell time yet.

Below are some games and teaching tools to teach time.

Buy her game or a toy for teaching time....
