If you rescue an older dog, odds are it'll be housetrained and may be used to a working family.
Please look into local dog rescues and I bet you'll find a dog who would be perfect for your situation and who needs you as much as you need him.
It worked for me...My wife and I both work all day, and we didn't have time to train a puppy. We rescued a beagle who was already housetrained and it worked out great for us. So...we rescued another beagle! Now the two of them play together or sleep all day until we get home from work, and then we can have some doggie time.
We walk them 3 times a day- once when we wake up in the morning, once when we get home from work, and once before we go to bed. It works out just fine.
Good Luck !

In addition to all the positive responses, if you have a WELL fenced yard you could put in a doggie door so they can go in and out as needed at night while you're working.
I would have changed shifts for my dogs but, sadly they both passed away last month at 9.5 and 10.5 years old. I instead changed jobs to spend more time with them as they grew older and their health started failing. I am, like you, an overwhelming dog lover. I can't stand being without one or two or ten but these were both "Once in a lifetime" dogs and it just wouldn't be fair to any dog we brought in now. To get my puppy fix I puppy sit for friends so I get to be around dogs until I'm ready to open my heart again.

I guess everything needs a sacrifice. Wanna dog? Sacrifice your day sleepin and take care. I have a wolf cub. I'm workin from Sat. till Tue. from 04:30 to 14:30, plus on Mon., Wed., and Thur. i gotta go to classes. I sleep really lil amount of time, cause i dedicate it to work, education, and my best friend Ice (wolf). You gotta make a tough choice.

My dog used to have REALLY bad breath. We always got her teeth professionally cleaned, but nothing helped. So we went to the doctor and found out that there were tumors inside her mouth eating up her gums. They had to pull 11 teeth. And since then our dog's breath doesn't stink at all! Hope this helps.

Try getting some friends or neighbors to let your dog spend the night sometimes (seriously) and leave him home the rest. if you give him plenty of atention during the day he should be fine. or you or your husband should try changing up your hours a little bit. (youwork 12am-10 am and he works 6pm-12am) i know trhis must be hard, icouldnt imagine parting with my dog!

Wow, 10 hour days. That would be hard even on an adult dog. Have you considered volunteering at an animal shelter to get your doggy fix?

you could get an adult smaller dog that wouldn't need as much excercise, and have someone check on it once a day. If you do get a dog, try to get one from a shelter or rescue, there are many dogs that need homes.

Some dogs usually sleep at night. So, I don't think you'd have a problem getting one. You'll be with your dog during the day.

if you can't actually have a dog, i say play with a neighbor's when you have time. you can ask the neighbor about the dog, and pet and play with it occasionally if your neighbor allows it. i've been playing with my neighbor's dog ever since my family moved. that dog always enjoys a little extra company.
