NO. And there is a really good reason for that. Anyone who uses heartworm prevention without a heartworm test first could potentially kill a dog. Go on PetMeds and print out the prices of the heartworm meds. Take them to your vet and ask him to match the price. If he won't, find a new vet.

I've read the original studies on all the hearworm pills in the governments web site. All of them that the vet sells are 100% efficient. Now with a number like that, why do they test for heartworm every year? And it is safe to give a heartworm positive dog the heartworm pill.
www.evidencebasedvet.com has in his articles a link to the government's website with the stats and studies on Heartgard.

Any of the heartworm pills are good. I like Interceptor because it's a pill and you know the dog gets it if make him take it. I use an ivomec injection...it's actually better than any of the pills, but you have to know what you're doing or you chance killing the dog.

There is Heartgard, Interceptor, and Sentinel.
Heargard is a hw preventative that also deworms against roundworms and hookworms.
Intercepor is a hw preventative and deworms roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms.
My favorite is Sentinel which is a hw prevenative and deworms against rounds, hooks, and whips. The best part is that is also a flea prevative. It will sterileze any flea that bites her to break the cycle.
They are all great to choose from and all are oral medications.

I just finished having my dog doctored for heart worm. He is past the harmful stage so we are good to go. My vet put him on Iverhart Plus by Virbac. These are flavored chewables and so he takes them like a snack which makes it easy to give to him. I trust my vet totally although I'm sure there are lots of good drugs for heart worm. Main thing is give it to them EVERY month like clockwork.

the best thing for heart-worms is taking the dog to the vet because if you try to do it yourself then you might give the dog too much and then it will kill the dog
