The term "cult" is an insulting synonym for "religion". The term has no place in polite conversation, and its use is evidence of hateful bigotry.

Interestingly, such "hatred" should be expected by true Christians in this time of the end, and it actually helps identify Jehovah's Witnesses as Christ's true disciples:

(John 15:19) If you were part of the world, the world would be fond of what is its own. Now because you are no part of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, on this account the world hates you.

(Luke 6:22) “Happy are you whenever men hate you, and whenever they exclude you and reproach you and cast out your name as wicked for the sake of the Son of man.

(1 Peter 4:4) Because you do not continue running with them in this course to the same low sink of debauchery, they are puzzled and go on speaking abusively of you.

(2 Timothy 4:3-5) For there will be a period of time when they will not put up with the healthful teaching, but, in accord with their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, whereas they will be turned aside to false stories. You, though, keep your senses in all things, suffer evil, do the work of an evangelizer, fully accomplish your ministry.

It seems signficant that the relatively small religion of Jehovah's Witnesses are the ones best known for their worldwide preaching work. Yet Jesus commanded that ALL who would call themselves "Christian" perform this public work:

(Matthew 28:19,20) Go therefore and make disciples of people of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the holy spirit, teaching them to observe all the things I have commanded you. And, look! I am with you all the days until the conclusion of the system of things.”

To understand another view, one must know what that view IS, and the best place to get correct understanding of Jehovah's Witnesses is from Witnesses. That way your conclusion can be considered an educated one! Call your local Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses and ask someone to come to your home and speak with you about our beliefs, and they will be happy to do so! As for why others call us a cult, I have to believe it is ignorance. The definition of cult in no way, shape or form describes a Witness! We are a worldwide organization of over 6 million strong. Cults are clannish, small and pinpointed to wherever the leader is. Our leader is Jesus Christ, with his Father Jehovah our Almighty God.

we are not a cult. a cult lives in one place worshiping a mere man and does what he wants. we as Jehovah Witnesses live in our own homes and pay bills and shop just like anyone else. we laugh and cry also. we also worship Jehovah God and his son Jesus Christ. people think we don't worship Jesus but we sure do. he is the head of the kingdom halls all around the world in 235 lands. the preachers in churches want you to believe lies about us. why don't people take the time to talk to us and find out what Jehovah Witnesses are all about. everyone is invited to any Kingdom Hall. we don't ask for money, never is a money plate sent around the kingdom halls. we don't change the bible to suit our self.

Actually, they're not considered a cult....at least not by anyone with a brain in their head. In the common understanding a "cult" follows a human leader. Jehovah's Witnesses look to a non-human as their leader, the now-reigning king, Jesus Christ. And to set matters straight, Jehovah's Witnesses absolutely DO believe in Jesus Christ, as he is at the very core of their faith.

The founder of Jehovah's witnesses, Charles Taze Russel, did his own unique interpretation of the Bible from the original language, yet he wasn't schooled in that.
He prophesied that the world was going to end in 1914.

Seek the truth.

They do not believe Jesus is God-there is more, but this one is enough to get them in the cult club.

In a word.......control. Jw's are told what to believe by the watchtower organization. It is not what the Bible says but rather what the watchtower says the Bible says. The watchtower states they are not inspired but claim they speak for God. The watchtower is truly a non-prophet organization.

Because they adapt ideals to fit and therefore changing the appearance and interpretation of scripture to suit their own ideas whilst condemning all others.
