It is confusing because we are limited to the human mind. God is formless, infinite, eternal, immortal, nor beginning nor end. God is timeless, spaceless, limitedless and distanceless.
Only those who have reached enlightenment, merged into Oneness with God will understand and have the answer to that question.
I too have pondered on this question because it is normal for the human mind to think in linear terms that everything has to have come from something, a beginning, but God does not have a beginning nor end. So that is why we are stumped when we get that far.
I do understand the timeless, spaceless, and distanceless aspect. That is just about as far as I can go.

The answer is simple...
We will only find out when we can ask Him directly.
We do not have the ability to know because of our confines.
We are three dimensional and we are linear thinkers.
God is omnidimensional and exists outside of the confines of time.
Existing outside time is proven when He says He is the Alpha AND Omega, the Beginning AND the End, the First AND the Last.
How are we to understand the things that are outside time and dimensions until we get there ourselves?
For our three dimensional linear life, we simply must trust that He always was and always will be.

This indeed has been a question humanity has wrestled with from the first sightings of recorded history and the unveilings of ancient myth, rumor and man's desperate desire to know more of who and why? Who am I? Why am I here? Many find that belief in a "god" of one kind or another helps them handle life's burdens, troubles and mind-rending collapses. The mental retreat of such a belief then carries such searchers through the difficulties that living produces. Man-kind has beautifully written stories of its beginning, the challenges that teach, the love that sacrifices all for one another. It is hard to break through that shield which offers to conceal our griefs with promises of relief... IF not now, then in the "hereafter". Only one who searches the sands of the Sudan, the distinct but subtle refinements of a Serengeti, the faces of traces of the hungry-and poverty-bound; and the possibility that none of this need be. It is only as we let loose the restraints that a Belief (of any kind that says we are different one from another) will "save" us, that we will enter into a harmony of peace and freedom. But men love war. History is replete with such records. It is a harsh throwing away, letting down, letting go. Each of us has to decide for himself/herself the diluted truths of ages past. Nothing lasts.

This is what philosophers constantly debate.... It's a circular question - like what came first the chicken or the egg - and who put them here. No one really knows and nothing can be proven, so you either have faith and believe what you're comfortable believing or you don't have faith and you're okay with that too. I personally believe that some things are beyond the realm of our limited understanding and we won't know until we die.
I know this doesn't really answer your question, but I hope that you spend some time thinking about what you believe, because it's important for you to know who you are - you're much stronger when you can answer questions for yourself.

amosunknown nailed it with her answer! I can only add that God is never offended by an honest question about Him, His Word, His ways or His nature. He is actually very pleased when people seek to know Him!
Hebrews 6:11 But without faith it is impossible to please him; for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
You just made God's day (so to speak) by asking the question!
(I don't know how to vote for answers, so please note that I vote amosunknown's answer as the best answer because she is absolutely right and also communicated the answer in a very clear, concise manner.)

God is infinite and beyond human comprehension. The Bible states that "In the beginning was God, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." Simply put, God is an entity that will never be fully understood.

This divine truth is the one being searched by Saints and Rishis for thousands of years...but at the end what they have found is the oneness and GOD in themsevles and in everyone. Discover the GOD in you. This may take years...
GOD is not a creator nor destructor, he is the operator. Whatever is here belongs here.

God creates, he wasnt created. We cant really fathom it because everything we are has a beginning and an end. But God isnt subject to beginnings and ends, to time, to creation. He's eternal. Forever. Forever before, and forever after.
Its completely different than anything we know.

Think of a fetus in its other's womb. It doesn't know what came before and has no idea what to expect next. Take life as it comes and strive to make the best choices to create peace on earth.
