Baking soda should NOT be used as a substitute for a fluoride toothpaste. You can use it in addition (though some argue this is too abrasive) or in a toothpaste that contains baking soda, but you should continue to use something with fluoride for its tooth benefits.

My favorite is Arm and Hammer Dental Care toothpaste.
It has 65% baking soda and includes fluoride to prevent cavities which baking soda alone omits. As for abrasivity, the relative dentin abrasivity index is just 49 (Crest Multicare is 139) so it's low on the abrasivity scale. I drink coffee and it works great to remove stain safely. And my teeth tend to be sensitive with many toothpastes but not Dental Care. Sounds like a commercial but just my personal experience. I am also a dental hygienist and have seen many patients who report the same results.

Baking soda is a fairly rough abrasive and should only be used in moderation. Once a week at most. It will remove all plaque and most surface stains, but actual whitening would be done by the peroxide which is a bleaching agent... like hair bleach. It takes some time for it to work but it can whiten some. However, both of these can be very irritating to gums and lips. Be careful and don't use them too often!

Baking soda is better for the environment, is free from scary chemicals, and can make your teeth whiter.
But it cannot prevent cavities like most toothpastes, can be abrasive (thats how it whitens) and doesn't have a minty fresh smell or taste.

If you need to use baking soda for some reason (like stuck on a desert island or something) mix a little of it with water to make a soft paste.
I heard about using it when I was young, and tried dipping the bristles of my toothbrush in a spoonful of dry baking soda powder. It DID clean the teeth, but ALSO takes off the enamel!

Baking soda is good for brushing your teeth with, but as another person commented, it does nothing for your breath. You could follow with some kind of mouth wash.
