you shouldn't have a dog if you aren't responsible enough to have enough money to keep it healthy!

my dog had a cough and it turned out that he had lung cancer! (no smokers in or near my house). unfortunately, there was nothing that could be done to save him, although the vet gave him an IV shunt and I hooked him up to a solution to keep him hydrated. However, your dog might have something caught in his throat, he might have allergies (try 1/4 of a Benedryl per 24/hours), kennel cough (very contagious, but not fatal) or some other problem. Most cities have SPCA and pet stores that will give your animal a low-cost or no-cost exam. At least you will know what you're dealing with. You might also ask your vet if you can pay in installments.

Well yorkies can sometimes have a cough that is normal. Did he ever have a cough and is it more constent? He could have a collapsing trachea which is common in small breeds. He could also have have a upper respitory infection. Does he have the kennel cough (bordatella) vaccine? Have you noticed any sneezing and discharge from the eyes or nose. Has he been a kennel or around other dogs like the dog park? He could have picked it up there. Finally he could be suffering from heart disease.

It could be an Upper Respirtory Infection or possiby (most likely) Kennel Cough) Maybe try and get him to drink some water , my dogs are 10 and 12, sometimes they do this coughing thing as well. When they drink water, it soothes their throats it seems.

I have a yorkie too although he is only 2 yrs old but he sometimes gets this way. I sometimes give him children's Benedryl in liquid form. You need to get a syringe and I give mine about 1ml not a lot and he seems to do fine. My vet suggested this. But just to be on the safe side as soon as you could I would take him to the vet. You would hate for it to be something more serious.

have U been spending the $$ to keep up the dog's HeartWorm preventive?
Heartworm is a parasite that looks like spaghetti when full-grown; it can be treated, but believe me, it's way CHEAPER & much SAFER to prevent than to treat; the treatment is dangerous.
the worms fill the heart, making it labor.
===========
abt payments for the vet: most vets will work out a payment plan; we aren't vets, & can't diagnose. also, MEDS should not be given to a dog on the theory that "if it's okay for their pet, it's okay for mine".
since U don't even know what the heck U're treating, there's an equally good chance that U'll make it worse, not better.
GO TO A VET - tell them U have short finances, but Ur dog needs help. they may have leads to humane groups who will fund or lend $$ for his treatment.
==================
Ur dog, ANY pet, depends on U for care; don't say 'i can't afford this' without even TRYING. if Ur dog needs vet care, U need to Get That Care.
==============
U may also find that a breed-rescue would take ur dog & re-home him, after treating him; that means U give up Ur dog, but he gets to keep his life.
ACT SOON - if it's heartworm, he needs help YESTERDAY!!

I have a Yorkie that's 12 years old and he doesn't cough but you should try and borrow the money and make sure to pay them back as soon as you can. If you really love this dog...I'm sure you'll do anything to take care of it.

Don't put him down. He might be getting hot at night. If you don't have the money to bring him to the vet maybe you should try giving him to a loving family.

He might have a heart condition. My Lhasa started to cough and I took her to the vet and he said she had heart failure. If you have an ASPCA in your area, they will help with treatment if you can't afford it.

it's best you get a loan or something, don't let the poor thing suffer. But you could try keeping his throat warm.
