Is there any place to find out about hitchiking on private flights...even sharing the expenses? What I am looking for is a website or central bulletin board of which flights accept hitchikers.

Would you post a notice on a web site every time before you jumped in your car? Traveling by private aircraft is much more like driving your own car. They don't have any set schedules or destinations, and fly when and where the owner/operator wants to fly.

At most General Aviation (GA) airports, you can find real old-fashioned bulletin boards where you can use a real old-fashioned pin or thumbtack to put up a real old-fashioned card or note about finding a ride, but don't count on anyone offering to take a total stranger up for a ride.

Perhaps your best bet is to hang out at a local FBO for a while and meet a few real pilots.

Good luck!

The problem is that the FAA is very strict about who is allowed to offer services and not (see part 91 vs part 135 regulations). This is to make sure that people have confidence about who is providing them a service (like bus operators). So, you won't find many people posting on a 'share a ride' publicly, but you might find one at your local airport or on that local airport's mailing list.

As long as the pilot is paying his share of the expenses (fuel, oil, airport expenditures, rental fees) then you can give him some money to take you somewhere. If he pays less than his share, then it's considered illegal. I doubt there's a website offering free rides, but good luck to you.

you can rent a small airplane, then have a private pilot fly you somewhere. you cannot pay them unless they have their commercial pilot's lisence, but you can compensate them for fuel and stuff.
