"A lot of pandering started going on, and you'd see soldiers and the American flag in every video. It became a sickening display of ultra-patriotism." "The entire country may disagree with me, but I don't understand the necessity for patriotism. Why do you have to be a patriot? About what? This land is our land? Why? You can like where you live and like your life, but as for loving the whole country ... I don't see why people care about patriotism."

Hmmm..."I don't see why people care about patriotism." Well there's some proud Americans!

If you are not proud to be an American, then get the hell out of America. Simple as that. You should be proud you are able to say stupid sh*t and not get executed for it

I like the Dixie Chick's music, and I was willing to put aside political B.S. as just that-B.S. But the latest comments from Maines are hard to put aside. My grandparent's fought in WWII, my father in Vietnam. On 9/11- I sat in a room with my whole family and cried because my country was under attack. I take for granted freedoms that women in other countries don't even dream of having. I have these freedoms because there are men and women-patriots-of this nation who fight on my behalf. That is why people care about patriotism, that is why people get all tweaked every time this ditsy twit opens her big yap. And just for the sake of argument...what is the difference between flaunting an American flag in a video to sell records and stirring controversy to sell concert tickets? There are those who would argue that this is what Maines is doing.

There is a difference between patriotism and nationalism.
Patriotism isn't about "we're Americans and so can't do nothing wrong", it's all about seeing ourselves in truth both the good and the bad. Our forefathers were Patriots, most of our Presidents were Patriots, and there were so many others men and women throughout our history. A Patriot is one that called or calls us to our best selves.
A nationalist is the opposite. Think of Nazi Germany.

Everytime I hear the National Anthem I get a lump in my throat. I am proud to be an America - the Dixie Chicks decided to use their popularity to go and spew hatred toward the President in a different country.

No matter if you hate the President, you should respect the title he holds, and when you disrespect that - you're disrespecting America.

I didn't care for Clinton, but he was still the President and for that he should be respected

could be wrong, but they were distinguishing between national pride (patriotism) and blindly supporting what your country is doing, and being proud of it (ultra-patriotism). The gist being that of course we can be proud to be from whatever country we hail from, but if you are myopic about what your country is doing and support it, then you run into the problem of being a sheep who believes what you're told (even if you may wear a wolf's clothing).

The Chicks know NOTHING about patriotism. Patriotism is pride in your country, love for your country, LOYALTY - and Natalie Maines lacks this. I love their music, but her big mouth ruined their future in America. She brought shame to Dixie ....

They spoke their minds. the right of every citizen. The public was not receptive to it. The public has been allowing itself to be brainwashed for so long, all it takes is a smear campaign by warmongers, the fear and schemers to get the mob running like lemmings.Just look at the propaganda that came to bear against the French simply because they stood against the war(business interest involved or not). I was and am proud of those three ladies. Peace.

The Dixie Chicks should be boiled alive in hot oil and their bleached bones displayed in the public square as a warning to future generations.

SCUM! I hope they have fans in other countries! I'd hope that anyone who is/was their fan in this country throws away anything they have associated with the chicks. They don't even deserve to use the name DIXIE! SCUM CHICKS fits them better.
I agree that using pictures of soldiers to promote careers is wrong, but she lost me when she didn't understand the importance of patriotism.

if they can't support the county they live in and ridicule everyone that lives here and that loves their country then i say next time they go out of America and start bad mouthing the proud people who live here we should take their passports away and let them fend for their selves in another country. then they might understand why we are so proud to be Americans and love our country.
