"Heavy Horderves" are the kind that you serve at a cocktail party when you don't plan to serve a meal. These tidbits tend to be more substantial munchies then just a dip & chip.

Making the guests wait to eat while you take pictures would be very rude indeed and also goes against etiquette. No one wants to stand around with growling stomachs while you and your new spouse are busy smiling for the camera. Depending on how long it takes for the pictures, heavy horsderves could be good. However, it usually takes a good hour (or even longer!). At every wedding I've been to (and that's a lot of weddings!), the guests ate while the bride and groom took pictures. ADDED: It really is too bad that people who don't know etiquette go around thumbing down people who do.....

Horderves Definition

I am guessing that by "Horderves" you mean "hors d'oeuvre" or a starter item in a meal. Literally it means "outside piece of work", presumably because it is served outside the main course. I think that a heavy hors d'oeuvre would be one that could almost serve as an entrée or a main meal item, such as coquilles St. Jacques, a scallop dish which can have mashed potatoes cooked in with it as an optional ingredient. It would be more filling than a regular starter item or appetizer..

Appetizers that can be made in bulk, to last throughout an entire evening.
