Well first off as a student doctor I have come across this. The rotator cuff muscle consist of the teres major, infrapinatus, supraspinatus, and subcapularis muscle, along with the levator scapula ms. Deltoid has nothing to do with the rotator cuff ms. These muscles that I have mention specifically have the actions of medial, and lateral rotation, so in easier terms if you have a hard time doing the rotating chicken move and there is pain, doing it, then yes you have a torn rotator cuff, first what you should do is put ice on it, then go to the emergency, because you would have serious problems later on, because you arm will become extremely inflamed, and will not heal right. I don't believe in sugery for everything, but this is one thing you will need to get to the hospital for to recieve treatment. this is when medical doctors are your friend.

Typically, a person with a rotator cuff injury feels pain over the deltoid muscle at the top and outer side of the shoulder, especially when the arm is raised or extended out from the side of the body. Motions like those involved in getting dressed can be painful. The shoulder may feel weak, especially when trying to lift the arm into a horizontal position. A person may also feel or hear a click or pop when the shoulder is moved. If after rest and a few days of motrin don't work go to your ortho doc.

Have someone stand in front of you. Put the hand of the 'good' arm on the opposite shoulder (i.e., right hand on left shoulder). Extend your elbow straight out in front of you. Hav the person in front of you pull down on your elbow. There should be significant resistance. Now switch to 'bad' arm on opposite shoulder (i.e., left hand on right shoulder). Extend the elbow and have someone pull down. If you have a torn rotator cuff, you will not be able to resist.

you will not be able to lower your arm gradually from a 90 degrees of abduction position...

try this.. have someone position your affected shoulder in like an airplane wing position (elbow straight and shoulder forming a 90 degree angle with the trunk) then let him/her let go and lower it slowly..

if it drops suddenly and not gradually, go get tests and diagnostics done for a possible rotator cuff tear..

No!!!!!!!!!!! Kimmy, this can't be true! Well, I never thought I'd be rooting against Favre, but it's all out now. Appears your assessment is correct, at least the Vikings think so. Well, even Brett is not a miracle worker, but the Vikings have gone all out to make him believe that. The way the Vikings were going after Favre, he could have had one arm and they would have continued. He said "no" why does he have to be like that. I still think the Vikings are better with him than without him though. Their QBs are dismal. Edit: Still love him, but this just has my blood boiling. I knew it, I just knew it wasn't true when he said "no" I just hoped I was wrong. Well, my Pack just better take the Vikes when he comes to town and that's the nicest I can be about it without ranting.

As someone who has had this problem I can answer this one. Besides shoulder pain, I could not raise my hand above my shoulder. I went to the doctor, who referred me to a surgeon. The MRI results were the deciding factor for surgery. Good luck.

You can not. Go see a Dr. and get some xrays, and maybe an arthroscopic surgery is needed.
