They aren't Mormon. They branched off of the Mormon church a long time ago and still believe in the Book of Mormon but have different beliefs. They are now called the Community of Christ actually.

The term "mormon(s)" is a nickname given to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS). A few groups split off from the main LDS church in the late eighteen hundreds and one of those was the Re-Organized LDS church. Because they are not affiliated with the LDS Church, they don't accept the same nickname as the LDS Church.

The Reorganized Church, or the Community of Christ as they are now called, seperated and did not go to the Salt Lake Valley with the rest of the saints and stayed behind. They believed that after Joseph Smith died, the prophet should be his Son, not someone else appointed by God, which was Brigham Young. They have alot of beliefs that are different but I am not completely aware of them. I believe there are some who wanted to practice polygamy which was forbidden by the church in 1890.

Good question.

"Mormon" and "LDS" are two nicknames that are often used for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. RLDS stands for the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This is a church that broke off of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints quite a long time ago. Its headquarters is in Independence, Missouri. They use the Book of Mormon like we do, but they have different doctrine and different practices. Actually, the RLDS church recently changed its name to "Community of Christ".

Just so you know, you can clear up confusion by referring to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as "members of the Church of Jesus Christ" or "latter-day saints".

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are seperate Churches with different beliefs and teachings. I would not feel comfortable describing the RLDS beliefs lest I inadvertantly misrepresent them. No one can acurately describe someone else's beliefs. Your best bet is to ask them about their beliefs first hand and make your own comparison.

A place I like to check out once in a while is newsroom.lds.org. It has the church's response to certain things that happen in the media, and I think they address you question.
