Steel containers are still used in the military so I would have to go with that.

Although stainless steel seems like a good idea take into consideration that it is metal and it will store your water at what ever the temp. is in your house. If you are not storing it in the house then you run the risk of having hot water. I'm not saying plastic won't heat up the water, it just won't heat it up so quickly.
One other thing to remember. If stored in metal for to long your water will have a metal taste to it. If stored in plastic it will virtually have very little taste difference.......You can also see through the plastic container.
For me i would go with plastic. Simply because you don't see metal water bottles at the store. nevah82

Stainless steel. Over time, plastics break down and some of the chemical compounds will seep into your water. Glass is also a good storage choice.

If I could use what I want I would actually use glass. But I would choose plastic over stainless steel.

my package design teacher said that if you rewash those hard plastic water bottles they can be bad for you if you are pregnant or planning on becomming pregnant, because heat releases chemicals in plastic. but you look like a guy (your avatar does anyway) so I dont think that should be a problem for you. do whatever you want.

stainless steel keeps the coolness in it and keeps your drinks cold.

Plastic, it costs less and will clean easier. Plus if it falls over, it won't dent or get all messed up. Less weight too.

Hard plastic, I think it would be safer.
