Before the procedure...

YES, Didn't like the needles...
During, not a problem. Didn't feel a thing.
After, hit and miss. It hurt alittle, but if I
hit it, chewed on it. Yeah.... it can be painful.

Root canals definitely get a bad reputation because for the most part when people have them, they are in pain to begin with! The nerve of the tooth is infected with bacteria, and while the pain leading up to the procedure may be bad because of the infection, the procedure itself shouldn't be too painful. If you feel any sharp pain (as opposed to pressure) as the dentist cleans out your canals, let him/her know and he/she should give you more anesthetic. Once the procedure is completed and the anesthetic has worn off, the inflammation may still be calming down. Take some Advil Liquid Gels as needed for pain. While the first 24 hours may be somewhat sore, it should be BETTER than before the treatment.

Not compared to an extraction without novocaine. Trust me when I say this. If you have an abscess, novocaine doesn't work worth a darn for pain abatement. So, do not even consider any work being done, until the abscess is reduced to a mere fraction of its once monstrous self. I know. I know. You didn't ask about extractions, etc. I just like telling you what, I think I know.

As others said, the needle hurts slightly (not enough to worry about, though), but the procedure itself was painless -- I didn't feel anything at all, and there was only slight discomfort afterward. If you're having one, don't get yourself all worked up about it, you'll be fine!
