I'm thinking about joining soon too. I found a few good online resources to help me out. My favorite is military.com. Check it out:

If you have any bad habits or vices like smoking or drinking kick them now and kick them good. Dip too. And don't let your buddies in the barracks get you back on them. If you can stay off the hooch and tobacco that's big. Don't keep snack food either. You'll get all you can eat at chow.
Push ups Sit ups and Chinups. As many as you can in a row. Do them right and don't cheat. Get some boots and break them in and go for walks in them to toughen your feet.
Find some hills and go running up and down.
Spend time outside in the summer sun and get used to the heat.

The military.com link above is the best place to go for advice. So go over there, and then I'll tell you what to do. Seriously though, mostly running. You can't improve run times fast & it's cardio in itself. Feel free to do some addtional cardio & simple pushup/situp type stuff, with weights if you want. But most of all just run. Take care of your feet & legs too. You can injure yourself fairly easily if you aren't used to it & it takes a long time to recover.

This may sound crazy, but you may want to work out naked. In the Army, in boot camp, you might be "dropped" (told to start push-ups) while wearing only a towel. And the towels always fall off. This may sound gay but if you practice this alone in your bedroom it'll be less awkward when you're doing it with 98 other men. My old boyfriend went to Army boot camp and this happened and one guy got a hard on and they never let him live it down!

Run, pushups, and sit-ups. If you've participated in sports, this'll help. If ya don't already know, figure what your weakest area of these three is and focus on it. You'll get plenty of opportunity to workout in basic training, but if ya know what to focus on, you'll have a running start(pardon the pun) from the get-go.
Just a hint: The taller, thinner folks. (like myself) tend to have more trouble with situps. Seems like a paradox, but is true.

While running, the best way to pace your breathing is to have either your right foot or left foot is your breath in and breath out foot. Every third time that foot lands, you should breath in then out.

slim down. lots of cardio and resistance training. remember soldiers need to have endurance, not overgrown muscles. keep your profile slim and try not to bulk up. basics like situps, pushups and chinups will work fine.
