The color of pee is caused by bile, a chemical the liver produces to break up fat. When our bodies break down bile, the pigment urochrome turns pee yellow. The lighter the color, the more liquid has watered it down.

In fact, you can easily determine if you're dehydrated from the color of your urine. Dark yellow is a symptom of moderate dehydration and is a sign that you should drink fluids right away. However, taking vitamin supplements can also cause pee to appear yellow.

Believe it or not, urine's yellow color was once believed to come from gold. Long ago, alchemists attempted to extract gold from pee. Needless to say, they were unsuccessful. However, in 1669, an alchemist named Hennig Brand discovered phosphorus while engaged in the undertaking. Among other things, this find helped to spark the creation of matches.

You may have asked this question lightheartedly, but for hikers and parents of small children, understanding the significance is important for health and safety.

Urine Always Yellow

The kidneys serve two major functions: they keep the salt content of the blood constant, and they filter waste out of the bloodstream. So, the main components of urine are (salt) water and waste products. The major waste product from cells in the body is ammonia, and the major waste product from blood is a broken form of heme called bilirubin. In the liver, each of these is converted into a less hazardous form: ammonia is converted to urea, and bilirubin is degraded to urobilins. Salt, water, and urea are all colorless, but urobilins (which come from degraded pigments) are yellow. So, if you drink a lot, your urine will be more dilute and clearer, and if you get dehydrated, your urine will contain less water and be darker yellow.

Bilirrubin. A substance metabolized by the liver is what colors the urine yellow. A part of the bilirrubin is excreted by the kidney, when the liver is not working ok all the billirrubin gets excreted by the kidney (as in hepatitis) and the urine can get reeeaaally dark ( almost like coca-cola).
If you drink a lot of water you actually get diluted, and so your urine, and the color of it.

Urine gets it colour from the "urea" in it. Read more here:

Urine is liquid waste produced by an animal's kidney. It is used to extract wastes from the body in liquid form. Urine can also play a role in animal behaviour.

Healthy urine is a clear aqueous solution, varying in colour from dark yellow to colourless. The main constituent besides water is urea, which gives it its colour. Urea is one of the three nitrogenous waste products. The other two are creatinine and uric acid. Urine also contains various inorganic ions. The lighter your urine in colour the healthier you are as this signifies you are drinking sufficient water.

The more impurities in your urine the darker the color of yellow. After a good night of drinking mine can be really dark. Drink more water daily to keep your system 'flushed' and your urine will lighten up some.

The yellow color is due to nitrogenous waste that is expelled as a general rule in urine. Drinking more water should help, but your diet may also be so high in nitrogen (meat usually) that your liver is overtaxed to purify it, or you may suffer from some type of genetic metabolism malady wherein your body cannot properly metabolize nitrogen to waste.

The yellow color is caused mainly by a chemical called urochrome, and also, (but less so ) from breakdown products of bilirubin (from bile salts), and urobilin.
