consider this...everything we buy has some sort of barcode or "made in China" imprint so we know where it's from. My point is that I feel that God "planted a seed" in our hearts so we know he made us. I think that is why so many people are spiritual, because it is who we are, and I think its hard to deny it. My thought. PEace.

D_chino_m is making an important point.

Try to understand that we are very much in favor of searching for the truth. Our issue is that for very good reasons we proceed from the point of view of the skeptic.

You wouldn’t trust a cancer researcher who takes on faith the truth of the first report of a potential cure. You’d be much more confident if our researcher performed due diligence and put the so-called cure through rigorous tests.

That is also what we do, again for very good reasons, when it comes to philosophical issues, including the claims of religion. So, even starting with your own words, that you “feel” that God has planted a seed, it’s difficult to see how such statements might provide even an iota of fuel to an informed discussion about deities with a skeptic.

I will concede you do “feel” that way, but how does that make it any “truer” than the “feeling” of the next chap who contends there are 43 gods? And why are you so sure a deity deposited that “feeling” in you? Is that the only accounting for it? Even if everyone you know and respect “feels” as you do, couldn’t that “feeling” have its origin in something other than a supernatural force? (And obviously, if you are right and the fellow with the 43 gods is wrong, then don’t you have to suppose his “feelings” are NOT the result of a deity’s “planting”?)

And that’s how we start these things

Wow. What an original question. Did you think of that all by your lonesome?

People are entitled to make choices. People are entitled to believe what they will -whether that be a god, the toothferry, the talking salt and pepper shakers. Whatever.

Why is it so hard to fathom the following concept: The Bible is JUST a book. It was written as a semi-historical document, but is mainly written to provide stories with morals for the people of that time??? Why is it so hard to accept that there is no God?!

It's probably because those who do not believe haven't been brainwashed over the past 1,980 years (1600 of it being the Catholic church). It is probably because we hold the REAL, yet VERY scary truth: There is no god; we are along on this planet; we live; we die; there is no afterlife.

It's also because we are pursuing truth through logic and reason, which are the enemies of faith.

Well think of it this way. Furniture made in the USA isn't always finished here. Often times it's illegal to spray on that laquer and has to go to another country for it before it's sent back here.

The story gets skewed over time. The bible is considered by some as a history book. Is our history the same as someone half way around the world? Probably not. You can see it as simple as the politics in today's news - earth shattering news, but what is really being told?

The world is bigger than Christianity and believing that it's just here within our grasp. Until they can see some strong proof, most atheists will continue to be that way.

People get religious when they face death,Jail, loss, separation hopelessness. Then when the situations gone,so is the religious front.Religion seems to fill the void for those that belief it.I personnaly tried very hard to believe, but ultimately common sense won out.Mainly because of my observations of so called religious people who push themselves all over everything and try to control evrything.Religion has caused nothing but problems since man created it to comfort himself.Imagine no re;igion.I wonder if you can.Even atheism is a religion under the definition.Animals dont have wars because they were not "smart" enough to come up with the idea of religion.Toss that around for a while.

Honey, people have a socialized fear of dying. Thus, religion. There is no "seed", only irrational fear. True spirituality is simply the seeking of truth in a purely logical and unbiased way. When I questioned my faith, I wasn't satisfied until I realized that I wasn't looking for the truth, I was looking for proof that Christianity was true. As soon as I shed that bias, and looked for truth no matter what it was, I came to a much more spiritually satisfying place.

And why is it so difficult to accept that some people don't believe what you do? Why is religion the most successful source of hate and intolerance?

God and religions are approximate 8000 year old brainwashing/controlling system made right after some humen figured out, that not all of us has to work to get food. After that, came churches, beliefs, church-taxes, religion wars, e t c.
I strongly advise some reading of the world history.

Believing in religions is like starting to read a 100 sided book from a side 90.

It is not that people don't believe in god they just don't believe in the same theory that most christians blieve in.You really think God cares if you believe or not,how can you believe in something you can't see and disbelieve in the things that are visable.I know, because we can think up anything and make it sound right and the lesser thinkers can parrot what is said, with proof or without proof.Christians have a beautiful teaching,If they can follow it,or if they have the wisdom to distinguish whats real and whats not.Good and bad can lay in the same bed when its eyes are closed.Once awaken its not possible for them to stay together!

My question is: why is it so easy to believe utterly made-up, illogical fiction? Why do you check your brains at the door when it comes to important questions like life itself, but you wouldn't believe this kind of stuff if you were, I don't know, buying appliances or choosing a TV show?
You "feel" god planted a seed--that's very nice, to feel that way, but it doesn't really prove anything, does it? It's pretty easy to deny things that aren't based on fact. I prefer not to delude myself.

Well, it's absolutely ludicrous. That's why it's so hard to believe. Give it about thirty years or so. Your kind won't be the majority anymore, and then you'll start to think for yourself. You'll see.

Just remember Captain Atheism said so way back in 2006 :)
