Check in your Autorecovery area for a file with the most recent time/date stamp.
You will have to set your My Computer/Explorer options to View Details. Show hidden Files and Folders. Also uncheck Hide System files.
After you have made the View changes, you may also need to do a complete search of the whole C: drive for files ending in *.tmp .
This will give you back 100's if not 1000's of files.
Here is what you are looking for:
Organize the search results by Time.
Look at the files that are closest to the last time you used the file.
The files that may contain something of your doc will look something like this " ~WRL9823A87F.tmp " .
It is the ~WR files that denote it belongs to Word in some way.
Good luck.

Sorry. Word saves a temporary copy of your file perodically in case your computer or the application crashes, but I'm pretty sure it deletes it if you choose to not save when you close. You can check though, to be sure. Go to Tools, Options, and I believe File Locations, or something similar. You will see a path to where word keeps its temporary files and you can check if it's in there.
Note: the procedure I described is for Office 2003. It might be slightly different for other versions of office. You'll have to search around a bit.
