Panama! It's very cheap to backpack there. My sister has gone backpacking in many countries over the past few years, and she says Panama is the cheapest. You get all the natural beauty of Costa Rica (Beaches, Tropical Rainforests, unspoiled scenery, and lots of unique wildlife) but without all the high costs.

Baja California Mexico...lots of unspoiled beaches, over 10,000 foot Mt. Picacho with observatory, Sea of Cortez, swimming and diving, mostly free camping, Vizcaino Desert, no animals big enough to eat you. Close to the US border. Bien Viaje

guatemala, there's a lot of beauty, and people is used to deal whith americans, so there's plenty of room for you there, and as you requested....it's cheap. i live in the country next to, el salvador, but when i want to save some bucks, i go to guatemala.
