There was a show on the History Channel that said that Leonardo was known for dressing as a woman, and many believe it was a self-portrait of himself as a woman. And if you really look at it, it does look like a man with long hair.

She's technically a female. It started out as a portrait of the MAdonna Lisa di' Antonio Maria Gherardini. She was the wife of a rich Italian man who commissioned DaVinci to paint a portrait of his wife. DaVinci made it much more and tinkered with it until he died.
Some people say that it's actually a self-potrait of DaVinci himself.

some scholars say it is a self portrait as a female of leonardo da vinci... but other than that theory, female...

michaelangelo however, used all male models, even for his females.. look closely at all the people on the ceiling of the Sistine chapel they are all built like men.
