Alanine transaminase or ALT is an enzyme that catalyzes the reversible transfer of an amino group from alanine to a-ketoglutarate. It is found in serum and in various bodily tissues but is most commonly associated with the liver elevated levels of ALT do not automatically mean that medical problems exist. Fluctuation of ALT levels is normal over the course of the day, and ALT levels can also increase in response to strenuous physical exercise

Alanine aminotransferase (ALT): An enzyme that is normally present in liver and heart cells. ALT is released into blood when the liver or heart is damaged. The blood ALT levels are thus elevated with liver damage (for example, from viral hepatitis) or with an insult to the heart (for example, from a heart attack). Some medications can also raise ALT levels. ALT is also called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT).

No, it is a blood test, it is also known as alt, it is used to test for liver problems, low levels of alt are always found in the blood, when the levels get to high it usually means that the liver has been damaged or hurt in someone, for ie: cirrohsis of the liver for drinking too much etc.
