I think they're afraid you'll walk away and leave it, and it might burn. Sometimes the timer on the popcorn setting is too long for a particular brand, and it scorches or even catches fire. If you know the brand you use is ok with the setting, then go ahead. But you should keep your eye on it anyway.

It is just because cooking times and temps very between microwaves. The time they put on the package is what they have found best for making their brand. I just hit the popcorn button and listen for the popping to slow down.

I always use the Popcorn Button at home and it works fine. Too bad the microwave at work doesn't have that button.

Because every microwave is different and the popcorn may burn if you leave it in too long.

I think it depends on the size of the bag. I think there are three different types. Anyways best bet is keep using the microwave button but listen to the pops. If its one full second between pops. It's done.

Every microwave is different and they are afraid that it might cook it too much or too little and then they will get sued by someone because it burned or something stupid like that.

Truthfully I think its for that reason. If you just punch a time 3 min, 4 min etc.., it may burn, therefore needing to buy more popcorn!
Its a conspiracy I tell ya!!
