Margarine was invented long before the second world war (and the first world war for that matter).
In 1869 Emperor Louis Napoleon III of France offered a prize to anyone who could make a satisfactory substitute for butter, suitable for use by the armed forces and the lower classes.[1] French chemist Hippolyte Mège-Mouriés invented a substance he called oleomargarine, the name of which became shortened to the trade name "Margarine". Margarine now refers generically to any of a range of broadly similar edible oils. Some people have also shortened the name oleomargarine to oleo

I've read that margarine was commissioned by those who pay scientists, in an attempt to control world population by accelerating aging. Who knows?
All super-saturated fats do just that-- and that's what margarine IS.
It's terribly worse than butter for your entire system, even if it tastes "acceptable".
Does it strike anyone else as very telling that it was commissioned for use by soldiers and the poor-- hmmmm...

I think it became widely used during WW2, as butter and milk products were rationed. I hear it came w/ a little packet of yellow dye that you had to beat in there to make it yellow... I don't know what took the margarine dunderheads so long to figure out to mix it in FOR us!

I honestly thought Margerine was around in the late victorian/Edwardian period. In fact I believed initally it was more exlcusive than butter because it cost more to produce, can't remember how/ why or where I got the info from though so it may be rubbish!
