As soon as people get the hang of operating them on the ground without crashing in to each other. I don't even want to think about some of the people driving today piloting a vehicle through the air.

Probably never. Actually a few have been built over the years but it's just not a very workable idea. There are a number of reasons for this but even once you get past the design issues and such there are tons of legal restrictions that apply to airplanes that do not apply to cars or drivers. For example how many drivers do you think will want to get a yearly physical to maintain their license? And every driver/pilot would also have to aquire and maintain a special radio operators license. Maintenance of the car/airplane would become a whole new ballgame with much higher costs. These are just a few of the problems.

Sorry to burst your bubble. Cars are great! Airplanes are great! Carplanes are...not so great.

hahaha. Well theoretically, you could make one right now. It wouldnt be incredibly hard. It would just be the weirdest looking vehical ever. And even if you could fold the wings in or somehtin, then where would you have room for passengers, cargo, etc. Plus there would be SO MUCH that could go wrong. Where would u take off? Could you really have 4 wheels that are relable enough to go 70mph for vey long distances, turn/handle well, AND be able to go up when you are in the air?It is really best just to have Airplanes and Cars.

technology advances exponentially, and it would be easy to make a flying car, the more controversial subject is trying to figure a way to power it - with the big oil crisis, chances are any prototype of a flying car created must be scrapped now.

probably not for 25 years

they have already made them but its a terribly dangerous idea to use them...i mean when a wreck occurs in the sky (which it would) then everything comes crashing down on everyone and everthing below...causing more wrecks!! so dont think it will ever be allowed...^_^
