Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist (R.-Tenn.) can’t say how many new immigrants will be allowed to enter the United States over the next 20 years as a result of the immigration reform bill he shepherded through the Senate last month.

“I can’t give you an accurate number,” Frist said. “I know that about 2 million are coming across illegally and I would hope that we could diminish that.”

In fairness to Frist, he is not alone. None of the bill’s supporters we spoke with last week could say exactly how many new immigrants the bill allows.

“There are different estimates out there, and we’re trying to get the best data we can get. We don’t have that yet,” said Sen. Hillary Clinton (D.-N.Y.), who voted for the bill.

Robert Rector of the Heritage Foundation estimated the bill would allow 66 million new immigrants into the country over the next 20 years.

They are avoiding the question because the Bill ALLOWS so much immigration the debates in numbers are only how much of that would as a practical matter be used. That includes the Heritage Foundation estimate of 66 million - it is only what Heritage projects will be used of the available total visas. Frist knows that full well, but is hoping we don't or is hoping we will think he doesn't. He wants to run for President in 2008, after all.

Pity, too. He would have had my vote but for the way he handled this bill.

Amnesty (from the Greek amnestia, oblivion) is an act of justice by which the supreme power in a state restores those who may have been guilty of any offense against it to the position of innocent persons. It includes more than pardon, in as much as it obliterates all legal remembrance of the offence.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amnesty

If it is really amnesty they are offering then it is unconstitutional because it would discriminate against the LEGAL immigrants.

To begin with, it is true that illegal immigrants committed a crime coming her illegally but they have not committed a serious crime such as killing someone. Unless you want to count as having the desire to help your family with some money a crime. Second of all, these immigrants are being exploited every day so they deserve to receive amnesty. Third of all, if it weren't for these illegal immigrants Social Security would be worse than it is now because they work with fake social security cards and they never claim that money that was withheld from them. each day they work hard in construction, maintenance, and doing jobs that no one would feel dignity of worth doing. It is true that borders should be secured, but only after the 11 million of illegal immigrants are documented already as being here illegally once, but in the process of receiving proper documentation.
