each state is different on rules for transporting a handgun. so it is best to call your local police for help in learning these laws. You can also go to a web site www.packing.com or www.packing.org i can not remember which it is. if you plan on going into a different state you must learn there rules too, you must follow there laws even though you dont live there and may just be driving through.

I assume you mean on an airplane?

From the TSA web site

Following is a summary of key regulatory requirements to transport firearms, firearm parts or ammunition in checked baggage:

All firearms must be declared to the air carrier during the ticket counter check-in process.
The firearm must be unloaded.
The firearm must be carried in a hard-sided container.
The container must be locked.
It is preferred that the passenger provide the key or combination to the screener if it is necessary to open the container, and then remain present during screening to take back possession of the key after the container is cleared. If you are not present and the screener must open the container, the TSA and/or airline will make a reasonable attempt to contact the passenger. If this is unsuccessful, the container will not be placed on the plane since unlocked gun cases (or cases with broken locks) are not permitted on aircraft due to Federal regulations.
Any ammunition transported must be securely packed in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.
Firearm magazines/clips do not satisfy the packaging requirement unless they provide a complete and secure enclosure of the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard).
The ammunition may also be located in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as it is properly packed as described above.
Black powder and percussion caps used with black-powder type firearms are not permitted in carry-on or checked baggage.

Call the local police dept. and ask them!!!! If you're going across state lines etc. My guess would be that you'll need info from each area you'll be traveling through as Im sure it varies from place to place and they'll probably require you to have special cards or certificates and other BS. If by air, call the airlines and find out what their regulations are! Dismantling it might be good???... transport it in pieces so that it wouldnt be considered any type of threat to anyone??? Why do you have one and/or need to transport it? If you're moving to a new area or similar... just lock it up and pack it! Are you a business traveler???? LOL

The rules are different in each state.

In Ill., you must have a FOID card on you. The weapon must be inaccessible (such as in a small safe or with a gun lock and in a zipped container or such like. The state police put out a pamphlet which should be accessible by internet/

Probably different from state to state. i dont carry any more, but when I did in florida there had to be two steps between you and the gun. In other words, inside of a gun box, glove compartment etc. Never accessible on your lap, the seat, etc. Laws have probably changed since then since no it seems you can shoot people at will in Florida. Check the laws on-line in your state.

In the state of NC you must have a permit to have a gun and a permit to carry that gun around. You should probably unload the gun and have it in some type of box in your trunk, because of you get pulled over and for some reason your car gets searched and they find the gun they are going to want to know why you are carring a gun is if you have the proper permits.
