I believe that this is largely due to the fact that men wrote the holy books.
It is commonly believed that many, if not most, people of the world at one time worshiped female deities because females produce life.
Somewhere along the way the females gods fell into disfavor and were gradually replaced with male gods.
What we see today is the result of such long ago changes.
Look at it this way for understanding. Women control life. Men felt they had to control women in order to gain control over life.

Religion is largely a tool of social control. It tells people how to behave, what is acceptable and what is not - that's basically where the concept of Heaven and Hell comes from. It's a reward/punishment thing.
In making women subserviant and by holding them responsible for the downfall of man etc, you are, in effect, subduing a good proportion of the population. You want to continue the population, so you make sure women are at home, procreating. And not asking too many tricky questions.

Actually if you do a little bit of Pre-Christian research, you would see that the woman was always held higher than man because they had the ability to give the gift of life...
It wasn't until the formative years of what is now Christianity that it began to change into what you described. Think of Eve eating the apple and destroying paradise, or Mary Magdalene treated like nothing but a prostitute in the bible...

Gordon B. Hinckley, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, said:
"[Women do not hold the priesthood] because the Lord has put it that way. It is part of His program. Women have a very prominent place in this Church. Men hold the priesthood offices of the Church. But women have a tremendous place in this Church. They have their own organization. It was started in 1842 by the Prophet Joseph Smith, called the Relief Society, because its initial purpose was to administer help to those in need. It has grown to be, I think, the largest women's organization in the world with a membership of more than three million. They have their own offices, their own presidency, their own board. That reaches down to the smallest unit of the Church everywhere in the world . . .
"The men hold the priesthood, yes. But my wife is my companion. In this Church the man neither walks ahead of his wife nor behind his wife but at her side. They are co-equals in this life in a great enterprise."
My church see men and women as equals and that one is not complete without the other.

Back before christianity started female gods were worshipped just like male gods. "witches" held power in small towns. To take control away from the religions involving goddess worship they made the female the bad guy. It helped shut down other religions.

Because most religions are developed by the men in power who want to stay in power.
Don't most religions seem like a fairy tale told to scare children when they go to sleep at night?

A lot do. However, Christianity does not. God makes it clear in the Bible that He did make men and women differently, and for different things. However, women are NOT inferior because they are designed to care for the family, love and submit to their husbands, etc. They are just as important as men. Any Christian who tells you otherwise is WRONG.

Because of the early male church leaders who were interested not in spreading the word of God or the true story of Jesus Christ but rather, in promoting their own patriarchal agenda and controlling the masses through fear, with the myths of being guilty of "sin" and threats of punishment and "satan" and "hellfire".
