It seems to me that doing that is like admitting that you are lower and worth less than men. Will this religion ever evolve along with feminist ideals or will it always be this way? Also, what exactly does it say in the Koran that makes women cover up?

I have no problem with such practices if they are exercised by way of choice. And indeed, some women who move into western cultures willfully carry their religious practices with them, and that is perfectly fine. Unfortunately, the ideology behind the covering is enforced in many Islamic nations by force, with dissenters being beaten, imprisoned and killed. It's hard to consider Islam and its procedural niceties a matter of faith for all women, when many of them comply out of fear.

Regarding the respondant above who made the comment about tolerance -- this issue has nothing to do with forcing women to take off the Islamic garb and conform to western styles. It has to do with allowing them to choose how they will dress and behave . . . a choice they do not have in many Islamic regions.

You know, there was a documentary in which prostitues had been complaining that the dress of women today has made it hard for them to earn a living because people are confusing who the prostitutes are. Do you feel that the more provocative, more revealing dress of women is a good thing for women? Today, more than ever, women are being viewed as mere sex objects. Do they not say that man thinks about sex every 30 seconds? Perhaps this has much to do with all the temptation around them. People who have these feminist views have a wrong idea about what is good for the woman. In Islam, a woman who chooses to cover her hair does so out of modesty, so that she isn't viewed by every man she sees as a sex object. She is protecting herself and protecting her dignity. In Islam, we believe that man is weaker in terms of self-control and giving into temptation, hence the reason women cover up and hence the reason they pray behind men (because if men were behind women, we know what men would be concentrating on when the women would prostrate down on the floor).

Islam is viewed in a totally wrong light. Islam liberated the woman, way before the west ever thought about it. Islam gave women the right to vote and the right to inheritance in the 7th century! Tell me when this took place in the West.

Women cover up by choice. The images you see on television, with the women walking behind the men in Afghanistan or not being able to drive in Saudi Arabia -- this is cultural, not Islamic. They ae mixing old cultural traditions with the teachings of Islam and, hence, it has become repressive to women.

Have you wondered why there have been so many female converts to Islam, if it was indeed "bad" for women?

For the same reason that horses agree to pull heavy loads all day, or cows agree to have milk squeezed out of them.
There isn't much they can do about it. The Muslim women also agree to share a husband with a few other women. Do the men allow a woman to have four or five husbands ?
In Islam, the men are the bosses, the women are cheaper than camels. It will remain this way as long as women agree that they're nothing. The horse submits to heavy loads, the cow to giving free milk, the Muslim women to bring garbage.

it is the custom that Muslim women cover their heads when in the company of non-Muslim men or in the public. The Quran states that women should cover 90% of their bodies excluding their face and hands. In some Muslim communitys it is required that their face be cover such as Sunnah, Salafi and Sufis. Each state or country has a different covering. In India their only cover half of the head or not at all. The turkish Muslim women where hats, In Africa most women do not cover nor where overgarments, they wear Afican attire. Most women are look down opposed to men. We will always be second to man since man was made first.

You have a good point of view, but allow me to explain.

God created man and woman. Both to be judged, so both have equal rights and responsibilities.

In Male world, this might not be welcome, but it is God say and what God say is the truth.

If a woman reaches her Manu pose she is not requested to cover her face, yet because women hate that fact they continue to cover-Female point of view.

If a woman is ugly, she will not move desires in men, so she can choose not to cover.

Beauty challenge man and woman.

Joseph-the prophet- was seduced by a woman because his beauty made ladies cut their fingers instead of the fruit in their hands.

And women have infinite stories.

Although beauty should not be penalized (God given), yet it needs to be protected and saved and not be used in temptation in deliberate way or by mistake, the same way fine treasures are treated.

Based on the above, it is recommended for tempting beauty, and only mandated from Prophets wifes, but communities and females in Islam world are taking this either
-As an order to follow
-An expression that covers hides something sexy.
It is good anyway

This is really a combination between how culture affects the religion (Although hands and hair should not be covered, many cover everything although in Haj women ought only cover hands and hair and always not to reveal body features)and how people not understanding what is truly behind that can interpret it.

agree??? Why do they walk a few paces behind, cause a woman is worth half a man.. So they are taught.
Women in Islam are nothing, and maybe we as outsiders see it as it is..
It is forbidden for a woman to be seen by any man except her husband when she is made up or well-dressed. (TR. P 430)
4. A woman must veil herself even in the presence of her husband's father, brother and other male relations. (TR. P 432)
11. Majority of women would go to hell. (Muslim P 1431)
To the one below, how do you know it was a woman all covered up, might have been a man.

to protect society from adultery, sexual assault, rapes and other countless vile things that happen in a 'liberated' society.Verses in the quran surah 24 verse 31 plz look it up.
sounds like some serious stuff right? Yet I cover up and I am going University next year, I am not treated or considered lower than any of my male relatives.
Who has a right to look at me? no one and i am completely liberated from thinking about committing adultery since my Hijab brings about in me modesty and self respect. I am totally confident in thinking about more important things like education and loving my family as Allah instructs.
Why does everyone also forget that men also have certain rules to cover up in islam? Its for both men and women.
Hope my answer gave you more insight.

i dont think it even says it in the Koran. the Muslim men like their woman to cover up so that no other men can look at them and the Muslim woman have to obey men cos only the woman in that religion can bring shame on the family and if they do the men have a right to beat and even kill her. i hope it changes very soon but i dont see that happening for years yet.
who do those f***ing men think they are!!!

iam not a muslim but do have muslim friends and have asked them about this veil or robe they wear. according to them it keeps them out of harms way meaning they cover up so that men do not oggle at them and cause looking at a beauty can lead men into temptation , a moslem woman would never be alone in a room with a man who is not her husband as two people alone can fall into tempetation , these are laws of chastity and if the women are comfortable with it why do we want to change them they only veil when they are on the streets in public places in earlier times if you look at the garbs of the christians they covered their heads and wear a half veil across the face , eastern women very rarely expose their body as this entices men but it is best if we allow them to do what they feel comfortable in

Women are large hearted, and men are operating from the mind. Men need to control, women need to be loved and they anything for u. Basically they are allowing us men to feel good by playing the control over others game. I do not know what quran says, but sure no scripture will supress 1 form of god from other, but people do for personal benefits.
