Don't know what you usually keep on hand, but I can make any of these at a moment's notice!
** Cheese Straws **
4 oz. butter, softened (1 stick)
10 oz. sharp grated cheddar cheese (a sharp white is good too)
1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Nice dash of Tabasco (or use pinch cayenne)
1 cup sifted all-purpose flour
Preheat oven to 375ºF.
Cream butter. Mix in the cheese, Worcestershire, and Tabasco, and stir to blend.
Slowly stir in flour until completely blended. Turn onto a lightly floured work surface and shape dough into a roll. Cover in plastic wrap and chill for several hours.
When chilled, slice dough in four pieces lengthwise. Roll each piece until it is as thin as a drinking straw. If they get too long, cut them in half.
Slice into straw lengths (or whatever length you like for your event) and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in PREHEATED oven for 10 - 15 minutes, or until golden brown and semi-crisp.Remember they will cook a bit in the pan after taking them from the oven.
Depending on the thickness, you will get about 4 dozen.

** Fat Ronnie's Fried Onion Rings **
2 cups. Flour
1½ tsp. Salt
1 tsp. Ground Pepper
½ tsp. Baking Powder
1 cup Buttermilk
1 Large Sweet Onion (sliced 1/2" wide)
Vegetable Oil for Deep Frying
Place buttermilk in one bowl and set aside. Mix flour, salt, pepper, and baking powder in separate bowl. Heat oil at 375ºF for frying.
Dredge onion rings in flour mixture first, then dip in butter milk and then coat with flour mixture again. Place onion rings in hot oil and do not crowd onion rings. When onion rings are golden brown remove from oil and drain. More salt may be added to your taste. These were traditionally served in a brown paper bag from the Topeka, KS, location.

** Chicken Puffs **
1 cup chicken broth
½ cup margarine
2 tsp. Worcestershire
1 cup flour
1 Tbsp chopped parsley
1½ tsp. salt
½ tsp. paprika
1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
4 eggs
1 (5 oz) can boned chicken or equiv. cooked chicken
Combine chicken broth, margarine and Worcestershire in saucepan. Heat to boiling. Combine flour, parsley, salt, paprika and Cayenne. Add dry ingredients to boiling broth all at once. Stir vigorously over low heat until mixture leaves the said of the pan and forms a ball. Remove from heat and cool slightly. Add eggs one at a time. Beat well after each addition. Stir in drained chicken. Drop my teaspoonfulls onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 400° for 15 to 18 minutes. Remove from pan at once.

PARTY MIX
1/2 c. butter
1 tsp. garlic powder
2 c. unsalted pretzels
2 c. puffed rice
2 c. spoon-size shredded wheat
2 c. unsalted peanuts
Melt butter in skillet or wok. Add garlic powder. Stir. Add remaining ingredients and toss together. Serve warm. Makes 2 quarts. Vary the cereals, choosing ones which are salt free. Walnuts and pecans may be used in place of peanuts since a handful of peanuts has 500 calories. 1 cup raisins may also be added but omit garlic powder.
Oven instructions: Preheat oven to 250 degrees. Bake party mix a total of 45 minutes. Stir twice during that time period.

I don't know about you but for a snack attack I like salty and sweet. If it's gotta be out of the pantry my favorite is peanut brittle. I think it's just to easy especially in the microwave. Here's my recipe.
10 MINUTE MICROWAVE PEANUT BRITTLE
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. light corn syrup
1 c. raw peanuts
1/8 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. butter
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda
Combine first 4 ingredients in 2-quart microwave mixing bowl. Microwave on HIGH for 8 minutes, stirring after 4 minutes. Add butter. Microwave on HIGH 2 minutes. Brittle should not get too brown. Stir in vanilla and soda until light and foamy.
Spread on buttered baking sheet as thinly as possible. Cool. Break into pieces.

Make some pasta and then throw whatever kind of oil/vinegar dressing you have in the fridge on it. It's a nice cool tasty snack.

youre gonna have to define "basic food" because basic food is always different. because there are health freaks and etc. so im thinking a health freak's diet is different from and average american's, so the basic food would be different.

I used to make my kids "potato snacks" and they loved them. Peel a couple white potatoes, slice them really thin, splash them generaously with vinegar (white or cider) and sprinkle them with garlic salt. YUMMY

a ghetto burrito...
get some hot dogs and a tortilia and some cheese...cut up the dog and put it in the tortilia and the cheese and warm it in the microwave...and boom!!!a ghetto burrito
