He's 20 months and we've had him since he was 4 months. He is already housebroken but I would like to keep his "duty" in one area for easier cleanup. Is this possible? What kind of surface is most suitable? Grass, dirt, gravel, sand...?

Yes you can... my dog does ..which is good cuz he is bigger than most women.
What I did was to take him to the same area on leash when it was time to do his business and as soon as he did it i would give him a dog treat after about a week to two weeks take him near the spot but let him decide where to go and the closer he gets to the spot give him more treats within 5-6 feet 1 treat 3-4 feet 2 treats and 0-3 feet 3 treats, after another week or two he will get it ...It is hard and time consuming but it will work.
I don't think it would matter what the surface is that he goes on.
My dogs area is dirt but when we travel he goes wherever he wants so I don't think he has any aversion to any particular material.

I took my dog to obedience class and learned that a dog does not like to go to the bathroom where they are living, mine goes in the very back part of the yard, grass area, most of the time. If they have a small yard, they do not have much choice, but a larger yard ,they can learn to go in one area only, keep taking to that area everyday, at least 4 to 5 times a day,he will get the idea

Well, they make puppy pads that are prescented so that they attact the animal to the pad. You can get them at Petsmart. I have used them inside with great success, so I suppose you could secure some on the ground outside and take them to that area, it would have the scent they are looking for to pee. After a while, they would get the idea that this is their potty place. It's worth a try anyway.

ok well i have dogs and the both are bug lazy great danes but to train a dog to poo in one stop...
you should bring him there to use the bathroom and then if he uses it in another spot then you need to slap him on the butt and drag him there and say "no this is where to poo"
i think that should work ,, i wish you luck and a grassy area should work

we trained our dog by tyeing him to one area all the time when he was outside. then after a while, we just let him out without being tied up, and then he would go there to do his business
we just used a grassy area

Yes you can. Put his excreatment in the area you want it to go, leave it there for a few days and then pick it up daily.

I have always heard that if you pick up the "duty" and put it all into the corner that you want them to go in. They will start using that corner only.
