Pop and other sugary drinks is the absolute worse thing, it doesn't help to hydrate your body, that's why when you drink pop on a hot day you still feel thirsty or hungry after wards, it is best to drink water, if you don't like plain water, try freezing it, adding lemon or lime to it. Also try to avoid being outside in extremely hot weather (like when there is a heat advisory out) use water to cool yourself if you "have" to be out, like on a towel or bandanna, you could have one cooler with ice water in it just for towels to put around your neck, also avoid wearing hats this traps the heat and keeps it from leaving your body and it will make you feel hotter wear sunglasses if you need to.

Avoid excess salt and sugar, although lots of fruits and veggies are great, drink gatorade. Stay out of the sun. Do not eat potatoes, they are starchie and suck water from you.

Avoid dry, spicy, or salty foods. These foods deprive the body of water. Dry foods especially. If given the choice of dry foods or nothing, I'd take nothing. Eat really juicy foods.

The best thing you can do is drink Gatorade. It has the water balance that keeps you hydrated and has electrolytes which give you a balance of energy that will keep you moving.

You need a diet high in salt, yeah that's right SALT. You also need to drink plenty of water. If you don't have the salt, you can't use the water you drink.
