we can't get another bird since we have 2 dogs, 2 cats and a bird. Tried a couple plastic birds, he also has plucked some feathers out of his chest. What else can I do to entertain him?

He stays out of the cage whenever we are home, never locked up except at night and when we are away, he has bells and a play gym, he plays with the bells but will not have anything to do with the gym. He already whistles, found out to late, we had taught him to whistle a few things and now that is all he does!lol

Cockatiels are closely related to cockatoos and associate with parrakeets in large flocks in the wild. If the 'tiel doesn't think it's getting enough attention from the other birds (in this case you) they will pluck feathers among other odd behaviors. Try teaching it to sing or whistle but mainly try attention. I would check the Cockatiel groups sites for more information first.

Unfortunetly with all of the animals you have in the house it would be difficult to give the cockatiel it needs. I myself have 5 birds and a dog so I can relate to your situation. When I first started my little family, the cockatiel was the first pet out of everyone. A cool little nifty idea is to get a little portable cage and place it next to you while you are watching tv or reading. This will keep it safe from your other animals but close enough to you so it can feel like it is part of the family. Another cool thing that cockatiels love are showers. Don't put them directly under the shower put close enough that they will get splashed every now and then. They love it! Sometimes they sing and sometimes they look like they will fall asleep. I would recommend you get some kind of perch that you could suction cup to the shower wall. The feather plucking usually comes from boredom. These ideas might keep them stimulated. Don't forget that you are part of that bird's flock and it needs social interaction. You could also put it outside in a cage of course and they will be entertained by the birds outside also. Make sure they feel protected though. If you put their cage outside protect it from the sun and put the back of the cage against a wall so that it feels secure. Hope this helps!

I suggest taking the mirror out of the cage as your tiel cannot preen an image. If it is tame, clip the wings and play with him and talk to him and rub the neck feathers against the grain. A single bird needs interaction and it can't reach the back and top of his head .

Birds are a difficult pet. What you may want to do is give it free rein in part of the house where it can play with your other creatures. It is lonely, which you also seem to be, perhaps if you addressed that issue your bird would move away from such nerotic behaviors.

I agree with the person who said to take away the mirror. Birds see the image as another bird instead of a reflection, and it makes them aggressive. Also, spend time with the bird, even if you only have one spare hour to devote to him. Talk to him and pet him. Make sure he has plenty of toys and make sure his cage is large and clean. If spending time with him doesn't help and he continues to act like he is in distress, please get him to a vet as soon as possible. There may be another problem causing his behavior. I hope this helped!

Play with him, get him out of his cage. They like bells. Teach him words it will take a while, but don't whistle first it will take longer. I had on that did a cat call "whistle" hey baby! Let him fall in love with you.
