Riley... sounds like a good name. The most important part of a dogs' name is that it should be a two syllable as that's all that dogs really understand and not get confused with commands.

Max is WAY too common of a name. There are so many dogs named Max that I would never take my dog to a public dog park because if I were to call "Max! Come 'ere, boy!" Just about the whole park's worth of dogs would come running at me.
Buddy is a good name in my opnion. It goes along with lots of dogs. I've seen massive dogs like St. Bernards to tiny little pugs called Buddy.
Shadow wouldn't really go with a Golden Retriver since shadow is more of a black-furred dog's name. But I have nothing against it so I'd say go with Buddy, then Shadow, then if you absolutely must Max.

Buddy & Max are so popular, Shadow doesn't really seem to fit a golden - I'd go with Riley myself

I like Shadow best. Not to hip on Buddy, because that seems to be a very popular name and I like things out of the ordinary. I am getting a puppy next week and am naming him Bodhi.
Shadow is cool though. I like that.

Max is a loving name, so if the dog is really gentle, that's a great one. Shadow is nice, but it doesn't fit a golden retriever so well...

I am owned by 2 Goldens ... Dusty and Duke. Those were their names when we got them, they are both rescue dogs. I drove 5 hours (each way) to save Duke, he was 2 days away from being euthanized.
Their picture is my avatar. It was taken on Duke's 2nd birthday ... a birthday he would have never seen if we hadn't gotten to him in time.
