Me personally, I dont like dreadlocks cuz they r ugly & they r the main ones that gets yur hair dirty quicker that braids do. if u get dreadlocks then u would have to wash them & dry them while they r still N yur hair & waht if u wanted 2 take them out then u really would have 2 cut yur hair cuz u wont even know where the dreadlocks start or stop at!!!
I ADVISE U NOT 2 GET THEM UNLESS U WANT 2 CUT ALL OF YUR HAIR OUT!!!!!!!!!!

start with gel twist or two-strand twist for the first two months dont shampoo your hair. Use a dry shampoo or sea breexe to cleanse your scalp during this time while your hair is going through the first locking stages. about every 2-3 weeks have your hair maintanenced, by getting your new locks re-twisted or by having them interlocked. depending on your hair texture, it will take no time at all for your new locks.

You have to not brush your hair for a few years. Wash it one time and then let it dry all frizzy and messy, that'll work. But why do you want to wreck your hair like that anyway? And the only way to take them out is to well. . . shave your head! And then you have to grow new hair. Not my idea of fun. ;P

don't wash you hair at all. You can wet it, but no brushing or shampooing. Your hair will turn into dreadlocks in no time.

don't brush your hair and then your hair will knott up into chunks.
if you wash it, then just let it air dry without brushing it out.

i had lots of hippie friends in college who did this...
personally, i think it looks gross and i heard about some kids getting lice and bugs from them. ewww.

you could also, use some mousse/gel and piece your hair out into sections, but this isn't going to last forever.
