Well obviously the previous answerers dont know the history of incarceration.
Obviously it was beneficial to the prison system to segregate women and children from the men because they both have different needs and necessities in life.
After terrible conditions were discovered and the prison system underwent a comple overhaul and renovation, prison administrators found that in order to improve the quality of life in prison, then each "type" of person must have a certain attention given to them in order to fulfill those needs.
The bottom line is that it has been extremely beneficial in decreasing violence and improving the quality of life of the inmates.
I took a Corrections course and learned the history but I dont have my notes in front of me otherwise I would refer to names, specific time periods, etc...

Uh, so that the women don't get raped and beaten on a regular basis? So that there aren't "competitions" for women? So the children don't get raped and beaten on a regular basis? As Punishment?

Is this really a question?
