You can download freeware software from www.download.com
Just search for AVI to MPEG converter.
I personally use the Ulead Video Studio and sometimes Pinnacle Studio DV which are not free though but are not too expensive and you get very high quality.
Pinnacle studio DV costs £50.

yeah definatley google a converter and DL it.. very easy, but look out for viruses as small appications are the most common source for them.

If you know what you are doing, use TMPGEnc Encoder. If you don't, go to download.com and search and good luck.
