Yes. Speaking from experience, my dog drinks lots of water after barking. Dogs slowly learn what not to bark at. The older they get, the less they bark if they are in a loving atmosphere. If its your dog hit them lightly on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper after they mis-bark. However, always investigate why the dog is barking and if the cause is benificial to your household, reward them with praise and/or treats.

My dog has gotten rather hoarse from barking too much. It was once variety of a shrill, ridiculous sounding pipsqueak bark for a day or so. I am now not sure if her throat used to be sore, however she was surely hoarse.

Our wonderful pooch can seemingly bark forever, but when we kenneled her recently, she came back without much of a voice. The kennel staff told us that she had been barking a lot and had "lost her voice" - we were to give her honey mixed with water to soothe her .... sore throat. So, yes!
