You wanted some sources. Here's one:
http://www.greyhounds.org/

Go to "What the Greyhound racing industry doesnt want you know" on the side.

Then go to "Why ban Greyhound racing" and "The proof is in the pictures". Its proof to the cruelty. And what IGLOVER meant about the dogs being too skinny? There is a picture for that as well.

I never said lure coursing and running them for fun was wrong! Its the way the people in the greyhound racing industry TREAT them! If they took proper care of them, it wouldnt be such an issue. But as those pictures prove, they dont! But having a dog run as a sport for fun and then taking them home where you feed them and love them???? Thats different.

I find that most people who are against greyhound racing have never actually been to a greyhound track, kennel, training center or farm. I am actively involved in greyhound adoption and our group coordinates with racing dog owners, trainers and kennel personnel. I have been 'behind the scenes' of several tracks and never seen dogs who were emaciated, flea/tick infested or covered with open sores as that website suggests. Is it possible that at some point in time, somewhere there were greyhounds that were mistreated - yes. But that certainly is true of ANY dogs in the world today. As another poster mentioned, there are many radical groups that propogate the myth that greyhound racing is cruel. Here on the East Coast many of those groups are funded solely by casinos who see racetracks as their competition. There is so much mis-information contained in that website that I hope you will at least read one short article about the positives of greyhound racing http://www.pupswithoutpartners.org/Greyhound%20Article.htm . If you take the time to get to know the breed, spend time at a track or training facility or at least take a balanced, unbiased look at the positives and negatives about greyhound racing I think you will be surprised at what you learn.

There are some awful pictures on that site, and I do know there is abuse in commercial racing, but there is abuse of animals everywhere. There are laws against abuse. There are also people who care for their animals in commercial racing. Lumping them all together and banning racing is unfair. It is like saying all people abuse animals and pet ownership should be banned because some people abuse animals. Banning racing also can mean banning of ANY running of Hounds.

I see this organization is a "sister organization" to In Defense of Animals, and they are a radical animal rights group who seeks to end all animal ownership and usage altogether. No hounds on your couch and no meat in your refrigerator (although I am not a meat eater, I think it should be someones personal choice). They push their goals with untruths and outright lies, while hiding their real agenda from real animal lovers to gain their support.

Some of the problems I have with GH rescue groups is their opposition to running dogs at all. They also were supporting that anti- OFC bill out in California this spring. I am not a fan of commercial racing and I don't OFC. BUT I do lure course and will be straight racing one this year (non-commercially). I want to continue this hobby because my dogs love it and I like to see them enjoying themselves so much. To join hands with AR groups is to help bring about the end of my hobby, and ultimately the end of owning dogs. Period. I don't think calling our Hounds viscious and bloodthirsty, as they are in California, is a good thing for our gentle Hounds. And GH rescue SUPPORTED this! Bad for our Hounds, and bad for those of us who love them.

I absolutely LOVE Sighthounds. But to join hands with those who would like to put an end to my lovely hounds now sprawled on my couch? No way. I will fight the Ar groups until my last breath if I have to. My dogs are my life and they are worth it.

Hug your Hounds

BTW, the idea of the hounds "killing each other to get the rabbit" is just plain ridiculous. I cannot think of any group of dogs less likely to hurt each other.

Additional details
No, you didn't, but many of the GH rescue groups do. A ban on racing usually includes any kind of competative racing in the wording.

It is really cruel to do that and most of the poor dogs die casing that fake rabbit and sometimes they kill each other trying to get the rabbit!
