First of all, the people in question are a woman and a trans-*woman*.
Secondly, I think what you are talking about is reflective of a more general trend towards not fitting into fixed gender categories. There are simply more and more openly transgendered people of various types, whether transsexual or otherwise.

Well its personal choice and I wouldn't condemn someone who is happy with themselves, but I think its increasing because our society has become more 'numb' to these types of situations and the acceptance has been increasing as well for all situations involving sexual preference.
