Ketchup makes it red. We mix ketchup with mayonnaise and a dash of worcestershire sauce, and some lemon juice. I don't have a recipe--I just "wing it".

Traditionally, our recipe for dressing ("vinaigrette") is :

one spoonful of red wine vinegar for 2 spoonfuls of vegetable oil (nothing that tastes strong such as olive oil, walnut oil, etc.) + salt and pepper.
It is also very good to add 1 chopped shallot and, in certain salads, chopped parsley.

Homemade dressing is usually ketchup...Not sure about comercial dressing.
