My room is freaking tiny and I'm trying to re-do it. I just want more space in my room and so I was looking at futons/ sofa beds first, but then I thought, hey why not a hammock!? People are saying it will hurt my back--but they've been as comfortable as ever since I can remember... Does anyone have any solid information on this?

Thanks for your responses, I appreciate it.

Sailors have been sleeping in hammocks for hundreds of years as long as the hammock is fairly tight it shouldn't hurt your back too much.

You could design your whole room around it, giving it an outdoor theme with a green rug (for grass) paint your walls and ceiling blue, with some clouds on the ceiling and where you have your hammock paint some trees opposite each other so it looks like the hammock is attached to the trees.

Okay...reality check. Consider you spend the largest portion of your day in bed. No, a hammock has no lumbar support and even after a week you won't be as pleased with your new bed. Second factor. if the room is so small, why trade your bed for a hammock that will take up MORE room?

If you want something different and utilitarian, why not have someone help you build a platform for your bed? At one end you can build in a chest for tv and stereo with shelves on top for cds, etc. If place properly, you could make some plump beanbag type floor pillows for hanging out. The space underneath the bed could accomodate a desk/study area. and be wired for proper lighting. Naturally one end would hold steps up to the sleep platform, but you could stack wicker baskets under there to hold more books and personal items. Painted in some unexpected colors, add some fuzzy pillows, beaded curtains, etc., and you can have a pretty cool room without seeing an orthopaedic surgeon on a regular basis!

It would probably hurt sleeping on it after awhile but if your wanting to conserve space then it would be good. Futons are not that comfortable either but they feel better than a hammock and they turn into a couch.

hammocks are probably out, unless you're a castaway on gilligan's island.
Futons are great....but you have to get the extra thick mattress - 8 inches.
Good luck.

comfy for a short nap but not for sleeping on daily. Why not just get a futon pad and sleep on the floor, during the day you could stick it in the coset.
