my hamster lost almost all his fur from cedar chips and once I changed to pine chips he was fine. My kitty litter contains cedar chips and last night I had to take my 25 pound tom cat with nerv related problems to the emergency vet. Could the cedar chips be the cause?

Cedar shavings cause contact allergy in some dogs, due to the oil in the
chips. Dogs with this problem usually have itchiness and sometimes
hairloss. There may be secondary infections if the problem goes on for a
while. I have seen two or three dogs with this problem during the time
I've been in practice.

There is a chance that cedar chips may cause respiratory problems in
sensitive animals but I have only heard of actual cases of this in guinea
pigs.

Wood chips in general can sometimes cause constipation or physical injuries
to the digestive tract in dogs, at least according to clinical reports. We
have seen this in dogs that chew sticks a lot.

A lot of people use cedar chips for bedding and we see very few problems
with them, overall, but there is some potential for causing problems.

Cedar chips are most likely the problems. My rabbit has cedar chips and she's never had a problem and she is 5 years old. Hamsters are smaller animals and they can have reactions with fur problems from cedar chips from just breathing it because they have a signifcant smell. If you have a cat with nerve related problems, then I honestly don't think giving him a kitty litter box with cedar chips was the smartest move. Cats and dogs have more cells especially in their nose. The smell could have easily went to your cats nerves because the smell could have simply bothered him. Don't put pine chips in the kitty litter box either because it could have a bad reaction to those and paying $100 dollars for an ER vet isn't fun. Just stick with kitty litter that doesn't give off any flowery smells just still with something plain for the cat and the hamster an any animals.

I don't know about cats, but smaller pets should definitely NOT have cedar chips in their cages. They have delicate respiratory systems, and cedar is dangerous for them.

I had pet rats for a long time, and there is a litter product made from recycled paper that is excellent for them. I can't remember the name of the brand I used, but there are many out there.

A noble man compares and estimates himself by an idea which is higher than himself; and a mean man, by one lower than himself. The one produces aspiration; the other ambition, which is the way in which a vulgar man aspires.
