Joseph Smith, the person, is not made up. There are plenty of documents that prove his existance in the early 1800's. His 'religion' which I *was* a member of was a way to get what he wanted from gullible people. Based loosly on christianity, white-supremacy, masogynism, mysticism, Masonry and control-freakishness, it had enough appeal to last for over 200 years. Based on its continued moves toward Christianity, It shouldn't last another 200.

You mean Joseph Smith? He was the one who supposedly found the scrolls for the start of the Mormon Church. He also had an angel translate them for him. He couldn't read them himself so Levi sent an angel to help him dechiper them. The man did exist but as for the scrolls and the angel stuff, I'm not so sure. I think he was smoking that peyote leaf too much. LOL.
I was married to two LDS who swear they aren't Mormon but a reorganized church of the Latter Day Saints, a Mormon cast off I guess. I had to read the book of Mormon in their church. That is why I chose Wicca, lol.

I understand the basic teaching of Joseph Smith, though I do not agree with them. I believe all prophets have some basis in truth, though Joseph Smith DOES seem to be a bit farfetched.

i find it hard to believe, but I'd have to reasearch it more and talk to real Mormans to understand the whole story. But right now I'm convinced it was all made up. But I still respect what they believe, even though I myself don't agree.
