Ok, the "c" slipped in accidentally... Anyway, I appreciate all the answers. I am going hiking somewhere in BC, Canada with a friend. I think my question is answered very well (except for a couple of low-life replies). Thanks!

It depend on what type of hiking you are doing and and the length of your time. If its just a one day up-and-down then you don't need anything beside water and a good boots. But if you're doing some hardcore hiking then you do need to prepare some gears.
Some of the things that you need for hiking.
-compass
-two way radio
-good sharp knife
-water canteen
-flashlight
-Ropes
-first aid kit
-Boots
-extra long socks
-few t-shirt
-Snacks
You should bring a cheap two way radio to accompany the cellphone. Mostly like the cellphone will not work in mountains and high attitude since there are no antenna towers near by. With a two way radio you can switch to the ranger channel and ask for assistance if you need it.
A good knife is a good survival gear in case you got tangle up with something.
Always make sure your canteen is filled with water, you will need alot of water as you hike your way up.
Rope and first aid kit is your emergency gear which should help when in need of assistance; rope can secure any moving part like tieing a wood to a broken arm or stop circulation close to a snake bite.
Always wear a boots and long sock for hiking. Boots are more durable than sneakers and will keep your feet secure from injury like twisted ankle, and long sock will prevent bugs cling to your lower legs.
Always bring an extra socks in case you got your feet wet, hiking with wet sock can be very uncomfortablel.
Its also good to bring some snacks with you. When you're body are tire from low energy, you will lose your focus and tend to get hurt easily. By eating snacks and drinking water it will give your body something to burn and give your body enough energy to find the next rest area.
I think this should be it for a regular hiking. Just don't camp and hike at the same time since it will definitely take more stuff to bring then the list above.
Have fun~

You need a good pair of Hiking boots. If the ground you are covering is rough, you want to protect your ankles from getting twisted, if you fall, or cactus spines from penetrating the boots. It wouldn't hurt to have insect repellent, either. If you are going alone, bring a cell phone. If you don't have that, you need a partner. I don't know where you are going hiking, but bears are a real threat when confronted. Air horns are a safe bet. They don't like loud noises. If you are in bear country, tie your food up in a tree away from where you are tenting. They are good at picking up on smells of food and will tear apart your tent to get at it.

A really good pair of boots ( not new) and clean socks, daily. also do not forget to take plenty of insect repellant to use especially around your lower pants and boots to keep the ticks off. Take clothes that can be used in layers, this way you can peal down to a comfortable level, as hicking is work. Take good care of your feet.

For a basic day-hike: insect repellant, sunscreen, cell phone (for emergencies), hat (you don't want ticks in your hair), map(s) (if needed), empty bags (for your trash).
