Most of these answerers don't have any business talking about alcoholism. Listen to dhardy55, me and other people with experience with this issue. Sadly there is a lot of misinformation in this list of answers..

It is quite easy, just answer this questions honestly...

IF, when you honestly want to, you find you cannot quit entirely, or IF when drinking, you have little control over the amount you take, you are probably alcoholic. (Big Book, Pg 44)

That is a quote directly from the big book of alcoholic anonymous. The biggest sign is if you crave alcohol. Only an alcoholic will crave alcohol. Alcoholism looks different in every body. It depends how advanced the disease is in you and in your family genetics. Don't let anyone else tell you if you are an alcoholic or not, only you really know. If you have ever tried to control your drinking then you might be an alcoholic. You only try to control your drinking if it is out of control.
I liked the previous suggestion. Try quitting for 30 days. Check out a few meetings during that month and listen for any similarities between your thinking and that of other alcoholics. You don't even have to identify yourself as an alcoholic, you can just listen at first. The link below will help you find meetings in your area. That is how I started.....

I was going to reply because some of the answers just seemed a little off but then I read dhardy's answer and I thought .. that's so perfectly put, I would go with his answer.

PS there are lots of alcoholics who DON'T drink all day or even every day, who DON'T start their day with a drink and don't wake up in dark alleys .. an alcoholic is a person who has a problem with alcohol .. but of course a lot of people who have a problem with alcohol don't actually believe they have a problem!

Two simple answers to this one:

If you have problems at home, work or elsewhere because of your drinking and you continue then there's a good chance you have a problem.

Quit drinking for a month and see how it goes.
If you don't think about drinking then you are probably ok, but if you've got a problem with alcohol you'll count the minutes till your month is up.

Hope this helps.

If you crave alcohol all of the time or if you can't seem to think about anything thing else besides alcohol. Or is you use alcohol all of the time to solve your problems or can't feel happy or well unless you are drinking or are drunk.

You can find out if you are an alcoholic by looking droopy, having trouble walking, and having trouble controlling yourself. You also lose memory if you're drunk. This is a reason why many people die in car accidents, and get DUIs.
