Feng shui works on the idea that there is a mystical energy that flows around us all the time. By arranging things in your home or office in a certain way, you can make that energy flow in different ways which then has an effect on your life (either positive or negative, depending on how you've arranged them).

Feng Shui makes more sense if you think of it in more mundane terms. Calling it a 'mystical energy' is a little inaccurate. Instead, it is trying to define how people react to a space/ location. It is trying to create the intangible feeling you get when you are in a space that just works for some reason. A lot of it has to do with cardinal direction- where the winds come from, where the sunlight is. Interior design uses color, water, mirrors, and screens to make a space feel better. Instead of starting from scratch every time you design, you can follow traditional rules of where to position things and say 'the energy just flows right this way'. In Architecture we always joke that you can solve any room's Feng Shui by putting a huge fishtank right next to the door. The proof is in every chinese restaurant in a bad location.
Of course, a lot of the rules are rediculous, but the idea is sound.

It's a garbage pseudo-science that claims one's environment, home or whatever can be designed so as to optimize the flow of mythical energy, improving health and such. Ten feng shui practitioners will likely perform their "service" in ten contradictory ways.

fengshui is a compilation of theories, that optimizes one's chi in relation to the chi of the environment to enhance one's destiny/ fortune or luck. each theory has its own system and calculations. it is made by the chinese more than 4,000 years ago, to optimize crop yield. later, it was adapted to be used in battles. now, it is again adapted for everyday living.
fengshui is not a religion; it is not a philosophy, though many people practising taoism, also practice fengshui. and because taoist people pactice fengshui for so long, fengshui for them is an extension of taoism.
to say that fengshui is the arrangement of your furniture to enhance one's chi or the flow of chi is like looking at fengshui from only 1 point of view. because fengshui can achieve many things if used properly. otherwise, it can bring misfortune up to 3 generations of the one who owns the property.
according to fengshui, man has 3 lucks: heaven luck, earth luck and man luck. man luck is what we do here on earth. heaven luck is our destiny, which cannot be changed. (in fengshui, destiny can be calculated using your birthdate and time, it is somewhat like astrology) and earth luck, which we all refer to as fengshui.
there is no one simple solution or procedure to have a good fengshui. for me, when i am auditing and recommending solutions, i usually base my solution to at least 2-3 theories.
most books published especially those in english are either not true authentic chinese fengshui or they only let you know one side of the theory. and even if you bought a fenghsui book in chinese, most good chinese books are written in codes. because the fengshui masters who wrote these books are afraid that their secret/s might go to people, who are not worthy or who are have bad intentions. so even if you'rem fluent in chinese and read these books, chances are you can't deciphyr what they are conveying. years ago, i tried buying many books. i thought if i read them i might get an idea of what fengshui is about. i was wrong. even fenghsui for dummies doesn't even come near to the theories.
what theories am i talking about. there are many. popular theories are 8 mansions, where you can use your kitchen to attract money into your life; flying stars, you can use this to predict what property to buy that its value may rise in the future, you can also use flying star method to see where to put your bedroom or kitchen to have a wonderful life. then there's water placements, water dragons is included in this topic. water dragons are clean water canals which run through your property in a specific degree. the effect is wealth coming into your life.
