Male or Female? Which are more mellow? Less territorial? More Playful?

As a rule females tend to be more territorial because they are the ones who settle in one place to raise kittens, etc. Males by nature are roamers. HOWEVER that is a complete generality. What you may want to do is go to your local animal shelter/cat rescue group and talk to them about what you are looking for in a cat. (Quiet, playful, etc.) I GUARANTEE you that they will be able to find a cat that has everything you are looking for and more. And don't rule out adult cats. They are less work than kittens and often even more loving. (Kittens are cute but they are a lot of work.) Talk to them. You can almost custom order a cat, and you'll be saving a life.
OH and if it is not already, get the cat fixed. They make better pets that way!

If you want a cat to be more mellow than which ever sex you get it should be fixed. However I did have one cat that was only affectionate when she was pregnant. Generally in the animal kingdom the males are more territorial so I suppose you should go with a female. Personally I don't think any one sex is more playful than another.

You should get a Maine Coon. They're just like dogs, they greet you at the door when you get home, give you kisses, love to snuggle with you, always have to be around you, and some of them fetch toys!

Between the whole Male and Female thing, as long as they are spayed/neutered, they will be less territorial. It doesn't matter what sex they are.

As for the mellowness and playfulness, each cat has its own personality and you need to see the cat/kitten and decide what his/her personality is. I have 10 Maine Coons and they each have their own personality from cuddling & kissing me all the time to wanting to play and play 24/7, it just depends on the cat.

Well A Female Less territorial and more playful. Because i have a cat after he got older he got more territorial and less playful. Females are just fun loving. Males are loud to but females are less mellow. But Males Spray and Females Sparay too so get them declipped when old. And another thing to keep in your mind females are very loud when they come in heat so watch out and Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!.

I have one of each. They're both fixed. The female is very cuddly and playful. She's also the braver of the two, which I find amusing. The male is more vocal and brattier. He is the one who gets into trouble and has gone to the bathroom outside of the box. But I love them both.
I previously had a male cat and he was pretty darn mellow. He never played and wasn't really big on people.
I'm sure there are pros and cons to either sex so just find a kitty that you like and likes you.

Females are less teritorial and more mellow. Dont get me wrong, a female kitten is still crazy! Just not quite as much as a male. And you dont have to worry about marking with a female. However, I prefer males. No particular reason, I just seem to fall in love easily with the males more so than the females.

I think you should get a male cat. Get him fixed and make sure to keep all the shots up to date. Go to a shelter and spend some time interacting and playing with the different cats there and pick the one that you like the best and fits you. Maybe you will even end up with a female cat but that is why you need to go to a shelter and spend time with the cats and see what one fits you the best...but remember some cats that don't seem nice at all could be real loves but they are scared in that setting. But get one from a shelter..this way you are saving an animal too!

male. they more playful and affectionate. neutered male cats are not territorial. though i don't know that they're more mellow. as kittens they're very fiesty, as adults they calm done more, but my boy is 2 years old and still runs around the house like a crazy man when he's up (usually only 6 hours per day - he's generally dozing the rest of the time.)

Honestly, that supposed all-male-cats-are-mellow thing is a huge overgeneralization. Just go to a shelter/pet store and get just a regular, non-pedigreed cat, shorthair if you don't like brushing. Look around for a while and you'll get attached to one. (By the way, you might want to get an adult cat because with kittens, it's hard to tell their personality at first and they might SEEM mellow but end up a total spazcat. If you want a kitten... look for one that doesn't look crazy for attention.) Wow, that was long. Oh well, sugar high... ((runs off))

Males are more friendly than females, but it also depends on the breed of cat. A mellow cat is a Siamese cat.
