Do you think your God will punish you for being a decent human being? Mine won't.

You can't do this, you can't do that, you mustn't do the other. We're not talking about serious crime here, just living life and having faults and failings which are part of being human and learning. You're all so scared. You follow someone else's rule book in case you get it wrong! How dull your lives must be!

I love the quote "The glory of God is man fully alive!" (St. Irenaeus I believe. I found it in a John Eldredge book.) I love Jesus, I love to laugh, love, laughing with friends, music, art, poetry, beauty, animals, fun. I love to live life to the full. Yet I am not afraid to cry, and I get frustrated and rage at life. I think some people can be "religious" religious (i.e. legalistic), and this is because they maybe try to control their lives. (I'm not talking about all Christians here. I am just trying to explain why some Christians behave a certain way.)To live life fully (I mean really live) you can't do that until you let go of your hurts and pain to God, and it is extremely difficult because it is frightening. Most people, even Christians, can't do that and that is why we hide behind a mask to hide behind or make ourselves feel better and legalism is just an example of a mask people use.

"...And I'm laughing out loud! And I'm finding out just who I am in You...! " - Sheila Walsh.

Didn't mean to go on so long. Just couldn't stop once I got into it!

Another common misconception. Religion isn't just about do's and don't's. It's about faith and worship, and love for God. Any rules that do exist are there to aid us in following our faith, for example going to church every week provides support because you meet with other Christians. You also hear (hopefully) some inspirational ideas and worship with others. Any rules we have are there to extend experience of life not to limit it. Take the idea that sex outside of marriage is wrong. Ok, that means you wait a while to lose your virginity, but if you sleep around when you're young, you run the risk of having a baby much earlier. You can't tell me that having a baby in your teens or twenties doesn't limit what you can do.

I'm not I hope scared of life in all its glory but there are experiences I just don't need in order to grow as a human being. As I get older I have begun to see the difference between pleasure (which is often short-lived) and happiness which leads to contentment and peace of mind. So I have begun to prefer the latter even though I still indulge myself.

Can you define "life in all its glory"?

What exactly do you think religious people are missing out on? The laws given in scriptures are fairly simple, e.g. not to kill, love thy neighbour, do not be jealous/envious, Honor thy mother/father - what exactly is in these laws which makes you think you will miss out something in life? IMHO there is a lot to gain by following these laws, e.g. friendship, respect.

If it is other things like not having sex outside marriage etc then it is fairly obvious that again the scriptures are right and the scientists have got it all wrong because we can see what promiscuity and homosexual attitudes are leading to, i.e. rapidly increasing incidences of Sexually transmitted diseases and broken relationships and broken families - I think I know which I would rather choose.

So what else is there which makes you think you will miss out on life from by following scriptures?

Do you think you might be a nice/decent person if you donated some money to a beggar and the beggar wasted it on some drugs/alcohol and died from it? Did you know that the scriptures instruct on what is considered right charity?

Did you know that scriptures can help you see the difference between being superficially nice/decent and actually beneficially nice/decent not only in God's eyes but also the rest of humanity?

Would you care to find out what you might miss out from if you don't follow scriptures? Would you also care to find out how to properly enjoy life and be nice/decent in a way which God approves?

In the first place, a "punishing God" is not the attitude of God.
God is non-judgmental, accepting, and loving.

Yeah, wierd that. It doesn't matter how good you are, you won't go to Heaven unless you believe in God. He sounds like a right nasty piece of work to me. I'm so glad he doesn't exist.
